Frontier checks cause traffic gridlock

Gibraltar was gridlocked this afternoon as frontier queues built up all the way back to Devil’s Tower Road and Winston Churchill avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses report seeing the Spanish authorities slowing down frontier traffic by checking every individual car boot during peak time.

Pedestrian queues were also abnormally long with Spanish police checking travel documents meticulously.

GIBRALTAR continued to buck the economic trend for Europe with GDP growth at around 8% for 2015 and virtually full employment.

Gibraltar’s workforce has increased from 16,874 in 2005 to 24,422 in 2015, a rise of 50% in ten years.

The salaries earned in Gibraltar are spent in Spain and this in turn has helped to alleviate some of the hardship which Spain’s prolonged recession has generated.

At the macro-level Gibraltar’s government has generated regular budget surpluses in the last 10 years and significant improvements have also been made to the local infrastructure, including a new hospital, a state of the art air terminal and the completion of a number of government housing projects.

In addition there are no wealth taxes, inheritance tax or capital gains taxes in Gibraltar.

There is no subsidy paid to Gibraltar by UK taxpayers

Can't ask for better than that.

The Spanish govt are fools, deliberately making life so difficult for their own citizens.

I see you have opened yet another Gibraltar thread on which you are ever the only Gib resident to post.
Have you ever asked your self why your fellow residents do not come on here in droves to support your views .

Do you really think that there is even the remotest chance possible that the UK will ever give Gibraltar back to Spain.
Are you not just adding to your obvious insecurity by fixating on events in Spain aimed at the Spanish population.
Why do we never hear from any other residents of Gib who share your viewpoint.
Maybe they live in a world of reality rather than fantasy.

A tale for optimists. And I don't think Spanish are preoccupied about Gibraltar? They can travel there as EU citizens and have another issues to be nervous about. Catalonia, for example))

A Guardia Civil patrol boat was challenged by the Royal Navy after it came too close to a US nuclear-powered submarine sailing into Gibraltar early this morning.

The Guardia Civil launch Rio Cedeña attempted to cross in front of the submarine but was stopped by the actions the Royal Navy’s HMS Sabre and a rigid-hulled inflatable boat, which manoeuvred in close, according to an eyewitness.

Her Majesty The Queen is 90 years old today – just one of many milestones in her record breaking reign. She is already Britain’s longest reigning monarch, but today – April 21 – on her birthday, she becomes the country’s first nonagenarian sovereign.

On the Rock today the Royal Gibraltar Regiment will fire a 21-gun salute in her honour at midday from Grand Battery House. The Inspecting Officer will be the Governor Edward Davis.

Tonight the Government of Gibraltar will see the lighting of the Queen’s 90th Birthday beacon from the top of the Moorish Castle (Tower of Homage) at 9:15pm.

British Ambassador sticks up for Gibraltar in El País

The British Ambassador to Madrid has defended Gibraltar against attempts by the Spanish Foreign Minister to portray Gibraltar as a tax haven. In a letter published in El País Simon Manley says Jose Manuel García-Margallo is mistaken in his view, pointing out that Gibraltar has taken important steps to ensure that its tax system is open and fair.

Mr Manley highlights that the OECD includes Gibraltar in its list of jurisdictions that have substantially adopted international tax standards, and has the same rating as the United States, Germany and the UK.

He reminds Mr García-Margallo that Gibraltar has signed 135 tax information exchange agreements with 80 countries, and offered to sign one with Spain, which the Spanish government has declined to do
