Schengen is an agreement about borders and the way they are managed. Doing away (in terms of administrative formalities at the frontier) with internal Schengen borders doesn't make any Schengen member part of another state. The borders still exist in terms demarcating the individual territories for all other purposes.

Surely that can't be an alien concept to anybody by now?
Spain is part of Schengen

Do you think Spain will allow Gibraltar to join in the name of Gibraltar?

Because in doing so she would have to accept that Gibraltar exists as a seperate entity.

For Gibraltar to join Schengen under its own name, it would have to join the EU or EEA first. For Gibraltar to join the EU or EEA, it would have to be independent from the UK first.

Spain is backing Gibraltar so it has the advantages of Schengen but doesn't have to go through all that.

Airport Tunnel Christmas Miracle or will Grinch Contractor Strike Again?

Flickering light at the end of the Gibraltar Airport Tunnel suggests the fourteen-year-long construction saga may be gift-wrapped and ready for the festive period. That is unless celebrations are cut short by further delays from a Spanish contractor twice disposed of by successive government administrations for failing to satisfy standards.
Works to connect the tunnel to the Rock’s road infrastructure cannot commence until Spanish construction company OHL completes its handover of the project to the government. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo believes the handover could be done in September and the tunnel should open once the connecting infrastructure is completed 12 weeks later. However, after an embarrassing series of unfulfilled completion dates, could Picardo be jumping the gun once again when this contractor has consistently failed to deliver on the costly project?

I'm willing to bet that if the PP were in power then there'd be queues back up to France to get into Gibraltar and going round Gibraltar twice to get back out.

Spain turned up the heat on its own citizens yesterday with long delays to cross the border. The vast majority of those caught were EU nationals, the bulk of whom were Spaniards, on a day trip during their national day.

The visible lack of progress on a reciprocal healthcare agreement between Gibraltar and Spain will continue to be a matter of concern for citizens on both sides of the border.

In the meantime, the Spanish government has confirmed to its Parliament in Madrid that they have taken on the liability for the healthcare costs of workers employed in Gibraltar since 1 January 2021.
RECIPROCAL
It will be recalled that reciprocal healthcare between Gibraltar and Spain was terminated by Madrid on 30 June 2022. This move may well have been designed as a means of exerting pressure on Gibraltar in the context of the wider negotiations for a treaty but the truth is that it has backfired badly on them.

Are Gibraltarians being priced out of our own property market?

Property prices in Gibraltar long ago surpassed acceptable boundaries.
We see more and more houses advertised well above the psychologically stupefying threshold of £1m, and the estimation is that at the upper high end of the property market, the square metre currently valued at £9,000 will carry on increasing and soon exceed the £10,000 mark. As a result rich foreigners and the local judicial-financial elite are buying these luxury properties, which working middle-class families can only admire in photographs or at a discreet distance.

Just as an aside, and apologise for borrowing this thread, we are visiting Gibraltar this Christmas and wonder what we are allowed to take back to Spain with us without incurring any duty, especially with perfume.
