Not sure if electric gates are still in use or how frequent manual checks are now. In past, there were times when there were no checks on exiting Gib.

Only ES nationals/residents and Gib residents with ID cards can move freely, there are border guards checking documents.

There have never been exit checks when leaving Gib to enter Spain or at least since the frontier reopened for residents 15/12/1982
The electronic gates have never worked with Gib ID cards even though Spain obliged Gib to alter it's ID cards to comply with their regulations
This caused queues when tourist unfamiliar with the system blocked all the gates including ones that were permanently open for Gibraltar residents.

We went to Gibraltar on Tuesday without any problems. Fortunately I'm Irish but my partner is British and was worried about his passport being stamped but after producing his Portuguese residency papers to the Guardia Civil we were allowed through the border. They did not want to see my residency papers. No problems leaving Gibraltar either apart from the usual queue.

If so I was wondering if it is possible to drive from Gib to Portugal at the moment?

The Spanish authorities were very helpful but I did notice that their attitude was massively different in my case because I have an Irish passport and they did not overly scrutinise my passport or ask to see my residency papers as they did with my British partner.

I would like to travel from Gib to Portugal and believe it is now possible to travel across Andalusia but I am not sure about Portugal.

As far as I know, the border between Spain and Portugal is open to everyone now.

The Andalucian border being closed to other autonomous communities doesn't mean it's also closed to Portugal:

We were in a car and our passports were checked by the Spanish border force on the way out of Gibraltar.
