Sanchez will have achieved his aim with the statement today that the Spanish have got themselves something when in reaity they only managed to get what they already had...in duplicate. Whether it is good enough to fool the Spanish public remains to be seen

The UK’s Permanent Representative to the EU has sent letters to the Secretary General of the Council and the Secretary General of the Commission to recall that the UK has no doubt about the sovereignty of the UK over Gibraltar. In addition, the UK will never enter into arrangements under which the people of Gibraltar would pass under the sovereignty of another state against their wishes, nor enter into a process of sovereignty negotiations with which Gibraltar is not content.

“Sanchez Has Gone Bananas he has (unofficially) managed to unite PP, Ciudadanos and the Government of Gibraltar. None of what has been said changes the legal texts. There has been no change at all. But one thing has been made clear - Sanchez is behaving like a PP politician when it comes to Gibraltar. He is not going to advance things much that way. In fact, the UK may be put in a position when it has to give him a political bloody nose.”

Unfortunately - as Macron demonstrated on the same platform as May signing of the draft agreement, Ireland has provided a veto to all the EU27 by insisting on the "backstop" agreement. This means that in effect Spain has a veto over any future trade deals that the UK might try and negotiate which will require unanimity of the EU27 or else the "backstop" will come into play and the UK cannot leave the customs union and cannot negotiate any trade agreements. France is demanding full access to UK fishing waters (and others will soon follow) as a condition for allowing the UK to leave the backstop/customs union - Spain has indicated that it will use the backstop as a lever for sovereignty over Gib and all the other EU27 are lining up to pursue their own interests against the UK. We have been really stuffed.

While I'm on my soap box, I have to agree with the vast number of Gibraltarians who voted to remain in the EU and another reason has cropped up in the detail of the draft Brexit agreement. You may see fine phrases about continued cooperation on security matters. You may have thought: "Oh Good! That means joint efforts against terrorism and organised crime, that must be a good thing" What you may not have realised - and a lot of our MPs also didn't realise, is that 'Security matters' also includes military matters. We have agreed to continue cooperation on military matters - including the move towards a unified defence policy, aka an EU army in due course, and we will be giving up our seat at the top table so will have no input to this policy!!!!. This will be in parallel and dilute NATO - how Putin must be laughing! We need Parliament to vote down this flawed agreement and demand that the Government revokes Article 10. If we are going to be tied to the EU (and that seems inevitable whatever anybody thinks) then we must have a say in the development of policy and rules which will affect our lives now and for future generations.
Some of us may not like the EU but it will be better to be on the inside pissing out rather than the outside pissing in (or trying to).

The Gibraltar Government has committed to ensuring a retail price difference on tobacco with Spain of no more than 32 percent, by June 2020. This is contained in the Memorandums of Understanding with Spain.

For anyone with twitter account here's a video of Spain's latest pointless provocative action... one of their navy's corvettes sailing across our territorial waters blasting out their national anthem, no doubt emboldened by the degenerates who received 10% of the vote in Andalucia last Sunday

Brexit or no Brexit, Deal or no Deal, GIBRALTAR IS IN SAFE HANDS No doubt, there will be more. However, we are confident at the same time that Brexit will bring new opportunities and that Gibraltar is ideally placed to capitalise on them. The strength of our people, our resilience, our determination and our resourcefulness will see us through whatever obstacles may be thrown into our path.

SUCCESSFUL PAST

* We have endured countless military, political and economic sieges over the last three hundred years.

* We went through the trauma of the wartime Evacuation of our civilian population.

* We lived through the harassment and economic sanctions of General Franco’s failed campaign to bring us to our knees.

* We endured a closed, or partly closed, border for over sixteen years.* We survived the closure of the Naval Dockyard and, more recently, we successfully saw off the pressure to share our sovereignty with Spain. Brexit is now the challenge of this generation

Jan 07 - Chief Minister’s New Year’s Message 2019 For many of us, today has been the first full day back at work after a peaceful and plentiful Christmas. Our Jewish, Hindu and Muslim brethren have enjoyed similarly peaceful and plentiful Hanukkah, Diwali and Eid festivals respectively throughout the past year. That is the fruit of the Gibraltarian respect and prosperity that so many generations have worked hard to create for our community. Now, as we all return to work, to school and our daily routines after the Christmas and New Year break, we must prepare for a year that will bring us as many challenges as any other.
BREXIT In some respects, the challenges we face this year as we leave the European Union will be greater than they have been for some time. They will shape many generations to come.

But we should not be daunted by these challenges.

For we will succeed despite them.

Just as the evacuation, referendum and closed frontier generations did.

I am determined that we will get right the choices we have to make this year.I am determined that our work will lead to more and greater opportunities for prosperity for our people and the whole region in the future. That is the determined work that the Brexit team, that I lead with the Deputy Chief Minister, has delivered by ensuring that Gibraltar is included in the Withdrawal Agreement, if there is to be one. That was the responsible thing to do.
It is what our bilateral agreements with the UK guarantee. In fact, the whole of the Ministerial Team in Cabinet has been involved in preparing for the separate logistical challenges that Brexit poses – with or without a deal. Importantly, we have also been preparing for the opportunities that Brexit can bring.
