Default Getting Married in Spain is it Legal?

Had an interesting conversation last night in that a friend said that a marriage in Spain wasn´t legal for two UK citizens living in Spain and that it would cost 600 GBP to have it made legal in the UK. Now that didn´t seem right to me cos if it isn´t legal in the UK can one of the couple then marry another person in the UK legally? Surely if you are married in the EU it should be recognised within other member states?

I attended the wedding of two members on here, and they got papers from the UK anotated to present to the mayor here ... no problems as far as they are concerned.

Our daughter lives in Spain, got married in Mexico, but had to get the paperwork sorted in the UK before the wedding.

I would suggest having a UK civil ceremony in addition to marraige in spain, would avoid the potential for any problems in the future.

friends of ours got married last year and found it was far simpler to take a trip down to Gib than get married locally.

I am sure it can be done but I was questioning the legality, and the original question if not legal in the UK can you then take another wife there.

Yes, it's legal if you get all the paperwork sorted.

The UK Embassy site gives some info:-

http://ukinspain.fco.gov.uk/en/help-...riage-in-spain

Not so long ago their advise was to get married in Gib and have the festivities in Spain.

A couple of years ago Irish friends of ours got married in church in Cadiz. It took a lot of effort to get the paperwork sorted but the marriage is legal in Ireland.

I got married in Las Vegas after filling out one simple form and producing two passports. Elvis led the bride down the aisle of the Little White Chapel and and sang a couple of songs. We drove back to the Strip in a pink Cadillac with Elvis sitting next to us and people waving all the way.

Who said romance is dead?

There seem to be different rules for Irish Catholics.

In Nerja they have scores of Irish church weddings every year.
