Default Generalitat Valencia to sack 40% of its staff

3,000 public sector workers in Valencia will lose their jobs - 40% of the total workforce. The estimated savings will be €300m.

The days when funcionarios had a safe job for life are definitely over ...

Do you think this is a good idea? Does privatization of public services make them more efficient? I believe it has happened a lot in the UK.

LOL, it doesn't say how long it will take to make the savings! I guess they are thinking long-term. But it's bound to have an affect on public services.

I expect they are counting more than just basic salary. I have no idea about employment overheads in Spain but in the UK in the private sector they can be as much as 50% of basic salary when you take into account employer national insurance, pension contributions and other benefit costs. Theres also employers liability insurance for example.

Then on top of that if you are trying to justify savings in getting rid of large numbers of people, you add on all the savings from less office/factory (or whatever) space, fewer vehicles and equipment, smaller telephone bill, less cost in running the payroll etc. etc.

Its not too difficult to come up with a large number.

I would imagine things have changed in many things of calculating the "cost of employment" and obviously will vary dependent on the level of sophistication of the job, but the overall figure used to be on the principle of "pay an office worker £10k then the cost of employment is £20k". This was supposed to include the rent, rates, heating etc etc.

so €100k can be taken to be €50k salary

still alot of money for a civil service job.

Agreed, so we can only imagine they are being 'creative' with the numbers.

well I would suggest that some of it might end up in someone's pockets but then it would open up the backhander debate - something rather repulsive when talking about redundancies.

have you noticed the number of Union Leaders doesn't come down in relationship to the number of members ??

Don't get me started on trade union leaders. I worked with a great many over the years and had tremendous respect for some of them who did a really good job for their members. If you treated them well and explained things to them properly then problems could usually be solved. Then there were others who were either so pig headed or so stupid that they didn't care if they encouraged actions that could only result in making things worse.
The current leaders of 'Unite' seem to come into the latter category.

You won't find many funcionarios in Spain earning even half that. Especially since they have had their salaries cut by up to 17% in the past two years.

The politicians, on the other hand are sitting pretty. Patxi López, the PSOE guy who was president of the Basque country for three years due to a rather bizarre coalition, will pick up a life pension of €97,519!

so at age 53 he is already getting a pension

but look at all the taxation he will have to pay on it

so with all his other jobs, how many more pensions is this bloodsucker going to get ? ?

That's the problem, the politicians get pensions with every job they hold, and they accumulate! He's not alone, Mariano Rajoy is clocking up about half a million! But they will never vote to change it, will they?
