Having lived in several European countries we must say that an eye level grill is a very "British" thing.
Even in the UK they area dying breed.

Spanish cookers do not have a grill, they use a plancha instead, and it would have to be a second hand one from a Brit.

Strange that I bought a gas cooker here in Spain from a local shop and it has a fully operational grill (not eye level though).

All the electric cookers have a bottom element and top element to use for grilling.

Just to give you a laugh. When we bought ours we were only popping over for decorating holidays and did not expect to be living here until 2010 and it was the cheapest in the shop. We moved unexpectedly in 2006 and did not discover the grill until well into 2007.

I stand corrected, blow me down, I can honestly say that I have never seen a Spanish gas cooker with a grill. That is one of the things I miss most, what is more I have had to explain to my family what a grill is. The ones that have not been to England have never seen a grill. Grilled food as we know it does not exist in Galicia neither do kettles.

Regretfully meme you are mistaken again.
We bought a “teteira” to use on the gas cooker some 5 years ago when we arrived in Galicia. We purchased it from a Ferreteria in Lugo. Since then we have seen many for sale for use on gas or with electric.
Our cooker has a grill, although this is not an eye level one like gallerie9 is looking for. Both Candy and Fagor make hornos con grill and there maybe other makes.
But we cannot find a product like similar to that shown below in Spain.

I bet you have but like us did not realise that it was there as they are not always obvious.

On ours instead of turning the oven tap to the left and lighting the bottom jets you turn it to the right and light the top jets.

As I said we found ours a long time after buying and using the cooker.

Hi Casa and Oddies, I cant deny that I have never looked for one in any shop in Galicia, I just have never seen anyone use one. My lot do the old pan on the stove bit for boiling water or milk. I suppose they are a bit like the Dingles.

As for the grill, I have never seen a drawer grill, like out cooker in the UK. They have a grill but in the top of the oven. I was talking about the kind that are hard to get now even in the UK, an electric grill in a seperate compartment. I have never seen one in any of the families houses in Galicia either.

Well it keeps us toasty warm in winter.

Just to explain to those who do not know this is a photo of a traditional kitchen here in Galicia. The fire should be in the middle and a "crane" is used to swing the pot over the fire. The caldo is then cooked all day as the fire would be quite small. The photo is taken of the one in our house. The use of wood to support the chimney is usually done in houses which were for the poorer folks. Our was a farm house. Stone supports is used in house of nobles.
