I (with OH and three children) live about 10kms inland of Viveiro in Galicia. There are not many British expats in Galicia.

Hi bz123 Thanks. I have loads of questions, which I do not expect to ask of you or answer, but the first thing is the weather..... we have heard that it rains, but, we live in Ireland and I find it very hard to believe that Galicia can be any worse than here !? So, could you please try and explain the weather in Galicia ? Thank you so much.

It really depends where you go in Galicia. Live in Ireland myself and just like here weather changes quickly and depends on the area. In A Coruna you'd get more sunshine than Dublin, but would probably have on average 50 precipitation days more. Vigo then gets plenty of sunshine and is warmer in summer, but still has a lot more rainy days in winter. Ireland actually has a great climate for it's location.

Galicia is a large mountainous area and you can drive for half an hour and the weather would be totally different. Last winter we only had three days, during a three month period, when it did not rain. No winter is the same as we have had really mild winters and then winters with snow. Where we live during the past winters we have had many mini cyclones and the worst one which bought powerlines down - we did not have electricity for 6 weeks. I must admit the wind during the winter is getting worse. When people ask me what the weather is going to be like in the summer I always compare the weather to Devon/Cornwall. My kids are still wearing shorts and t-shirts as the weather is still mild mid-October.

Maybe you should try and find a website which shows past weather for Galicia. In the summer it could be teeming with rain, cold, windy where we live but if we visited Lugo the sun would be shining and hot. Then in winter the sun could be shining yet if we wanted to visit Lugo we would not be able to because the road would be closed because of the snow.

Maybe if you went south in Galicia the weather would be better.

The answer is Asturias which is much milder but just as green :)

We are actually a little confused and torn between Galicia and Asturias.... is there a weather difference between them, is one cheaper than the other...????

Asturias is a bit milder as long as you don't live up a mountain. It isnt as windy either as it doesnt stick out into the ocean like Galicia does

It is impossible to generalise about price difference. It depends on exactly where you will be buying/renting a property

In Asturias, a 4 bed house can set ypu back 600k in the nice part of Oviedo/Gijon or 60k off in the middle of nowhere. I should think there is a similar story in Galicia

Generally the rule is that prices can cheaper the further away from the Coast and the cities you are

You need to work out what kind of lifestyle you want. Living in a remote village is nothing like living near a city or on the coast. Personally it would be my idea of hell but each to their own

The question would be, do you want to move there? If you don't like rain, non of these places will really be for you. You go there for the culture and scenery, but not because you want to escape rain. As criketman mentioned, prices vary just like Ireland. Further away from the coast, the cheaper it gets.

Yes we want to move to one of them.. not for sun but for culture and scenery, and bagpipes.... what are the main airports for access to Galicia and Asturias ?

There aren't any big airports in the area

Oviedo/Asturias airport, La Coruna and Vigo. All pretty small with not that many flights to the UK. Santander airport is a bit further away
