Fuel consumption - is there any easy rule of thumb conversion?

I've become a bit of a mpg anorak since 7yo's school move has meant more driving every day. However my brain hasn't got to grips with litres per 100km. Is there an easy way to think back to mpg? Once I've done that a few times (ok a few hundreds of times) I'l start to think in litres/100km but for now I need a quick ready reckoner.
nb by driving more sensibly, I've dropped from averaging 9ltr/100km to currently 7.8 which strikes me about a 12.5% saving.......that's of course before you factor in how many more kms I do every week:eek:

I dont know how to work it all out either, but I have a lot of driving to do everyday - mainly the school runs :frown:. The one thing I do notice is that when my OH is over and he drives we use infinately more petrol! I think its a man thing, he likes to drive faster, slam the brakes on harder and stay in the higher gears for longer! I've also noticed that the price of pertol/diesel changes much more often in Spain than in the UK. Almost on a daily basis, it may go either up or down, so not necessarily a good thing!

The news coming from the middle east may make fuel more expensive soon.:(:(:(:(

If there starting to struggle financially we are all gonna be in trouble.

Calculated based on 100 km = 62.5 miles, and 1 (imperial) gallon = 4.54 litres. So 4.54 litres per 100 km is 1 gallon per 62.5 miles. Not exactly an easy rule of thumb!

5 L = 56 mpg
6 L = 47 mpg
7 L = 40 mpg
8 L = 35 mpg
9 L = 31 mpg

So my humungous 4x4 pickup that OH criticises re the ozone layer, carbon mountains etc., is producing over 35mpg.

(even with my right foot to the floor I reckon it was around 30mpg so :p

If you have a calculator handy just divide 281 by the litres/100km figure.

Re: Fuel consumption - is there any easy rule of thumb conversion?

Just type "convert 5 litres per 100km into miles per uk gallon" into google and up will pop the answer - (5 litres) per (100 km) = 56.4962106 miles per Imperial gallon. Dead handy for other quick maths and conversions.

Or try this website URL:-

... or be a true anorak like me and keep the figures in an excel spreadsheet. When your 4x4 only does 15mpg (which, coincidentaly, is about 15L/100Km) then you need to try and do anything to improve this figure - including looking for trends to show that it might need servicing etc.
