finding work in granada vs madrid
 

hi gang,

basically looking to move to Spain for a few months as I have an internship where I work anywhere with internet.

I've visited Granada and absolutely loved it so my preference would be to move there. However, I'm aware that the South has poorer economy in general and that Madrid has language academies etc and obvisouly is the big smoke.

Would I be wasting my time trying to get a hospitality or teaching job in Granada?

Well I'm normally the poster here who says that Madrid's the best place in spain to find work, in a similar way that London's a good place to find work in England, and Cornwall isn't.
However in your case you may try to find if there are openings in Granada, especially in hospitality. It is certainly a big lure for tourists, but whether that means there would be openings for native English speakers is another matter. Maybe a poster here who lives in Granada can help you? I've read of Brits who ended up teaching in Granada, so it does happen, but the wages are correspondingly lower.

I'm a bit torn cos Granada rent will be a lot cheaper but I could lose money if I cant get a job.

Almost 90.000 Granadinos out of work (out of a total population of just under a quarter a million) and still rising. Don't come to Granada looking for work.

Maybe too late.
All I know is that there are so few Spaniards from Granada in Madrid that I have recently noticed it. Been in Madrid for years.
There are so many here from other parts of Spain but I know no-one from Granada.
I have started asking Spaniards why this is. Is it because Granada is such a great place to be that no-one leaves?
If you go there, let us know!
Must admit I love Madrid especially if you don't have a set hours, office job and can roam the city in the week. Great place!

Hope it's not too late. If finances are a concern for you, there definitely come to Madrid. If you are a TEFL teacher it will be child's play to find work. I struggled for a year and a half in Andalucia (it was so beautiful down there though)! Have been in Madrid for less than a month and Im've got so much work I had to refuse some already. And pay is decent too.

Well done. I hope you've got work in blocks though; it can be tiring in the long run if every hour or two you have to get on the metro to arrive at your next job.

I've said it so many times on this board that Madrid's the best place to find work. Yet I suppose there will be those who still disbelieve the evidence...

The only one who disbelieves it's a good place to find work appears to be someone based in Marbella who's never claimed to have worked/lived in Madrid. Why do you disbelieve other people's experiences? If you think other posters are just liars, why waste time here?

I'm lucky enough to be in London now, as it offers a lot, but I still have plans to get back out permanently to Spain. I don't know if those plans will come to fruition , but that's the future for you - you never know what's around the corner, money or health wise. If Jackytoo thinks I'm lying about that, I'm genuinely sorry for her. I'm not going to claim to be a great story-teller, but if I was going to lie I'd claim to be Richard Branson, or at least a millionaire. Maybe pretend to be someone who made money on property in Marbella and now sits around complaining about the place :rofl:

Health issues....yes I remember that one...what's up with the spanish health service, isn't it good enough for youzzz:confused: Or wasn't you in the system and couldn't afford private!

Nothing to do with health costs - in fact I suspect the drugs would be less expensive in Spain. More to do with her and my family members being around to help, especially if I'm out at work - which luckily isn't often needed.

Not alway true, I know someone who pays over 220 euros for medication a month, and that is with the discount for " cotizando" being taken into consideration.

This is for 12 lots of tablets, and in the UK the cost would be 12 x 6 odd quid, which would work out a lot less each month.
