Back to the film, the title made me laugh out loud.

So Ford was a coward for shooting JJ in the back?

I read an account of JJ which described him as a jug eared psychopath with a predeliction for shooting people who were either tied up, or with their back turned.

He only ever once shot someone face to face in a duel, and that was because he knew the guy's guns had been emptied by a friend of his.

I guess it's all part of the drive of Americans to sanitise their past. After all, they don't have much.....
