Hi there,

I haven't been, but a Spanish friend was telling me the other day that you can't move for people there, at this time of year!!

Hi Sam,
It must be warming up in Extremadura now?
I've not been to the feria de abril in Sevilla either. Saw a bit of the illuminations on the Espana Directa program last night.

Carol

Watch some of this on the TV last night, thought it would be good to go but then thought I don't really like crowds so I would most probably want to come home as soon as we got there. Will watch it again if it is on TV I'm sure it will be.

Hi Carol

Well, you'd think it would be warming up here by now, wouldn't you!?

We have just had one lovely week (yes, a whole week!) of glorious weather, but today we're back to the wet, gloomy, grey, miserable stuff that hung over us for two weeks at Easter

The 4 day long cheese fiesta starts in Trujillo on Friday, so no doubt the sun will come out for that.................and the smell will be................

Our Spanish TV doesn't work, so I'll have to see if I can catch a bit of the Sevilla coverage on the news in the bar later.
I'm sure it's really spectacular.

All good wishes,
from Sam.

How sad am I? I love going into bars just to watch the telly! Nothing better than a plate of olives, albondigas, and a cold whatever... centre seats, plonked in front of the screen!
Hhhmmm, the cheese fiesta in Trujillo sounds gooey! The town square (with Pizarro on horseback) is a treasure.
Let's see, how many varieties of sheep/goats' cheeses can there be? Yummy! Are the cow cheeses from the north?
Do they have food stalls at the feria de abril? I'm wondering if it is like the feria de mariscos etc. along the coasts...
Regards,
Carol

The problem with the feria in Sevilla is that most of the casitas are private so it´s hard to find a drink/food/toilets etc. Totally different from Jerez feria and the others where almost everything is open to the public. Great though if you know people who have admission!
It started this week. I know cos I had problems getting Halifax España there to transfer money cos they said it´s feria week and they only work 2 hours a day apparantly!

Hi Lis48,
Last year's Feria didn't seem that long ago! That's the trouble when growing older! One fiesta merges into the next...
I remember the casitas on the telly, and you are right when you say you need an invitation.
When is the next fiesta? May?
Regards,
Carol

I was at the feria last Tuesday. Yes it was crowded, but not unbearably so. Use the official park and ride and be prepared for a lot of walking. There are signs off the main motorways directing you, or take a taxi. The daytime is best for horses and carriages, elegant women riding side saddle. Yes it is annoying that most of the casitas are private. There are a few large public ones, mostly from the poilitical parties, situated near the large entrance arch. There are stages in the casitas where people dance Sevillanas, and also, my favourite, impromptu groups in the street. I went home about 3 in the afternoon and returned at 9 pm after a three hour siesta. Lights everywhere. It is a just a case of strolling, absorbing, and relaxing, best done with groups of friends. I did wonder what happened in the days before mobile phones, as so many people seemed to be trying to liaise with each other. Perhaps there were unexpected and intriguing encounters amidst the frantic search for one's friends?? It all ends on Sunday, but the last day is much more casual..I would opt for the Saturday.

yes, most of the casetas are private, but there are a few public ones - political parties (the communists' one is small but fun) and various barrios of Seville. these get rough at night. Sevillanos are very sniffy about going to the feria at the weekend - they all go to the beach, and all the madrilenos come, which they hate - but i;m not sure if that would make any difference to your experience of it! i;m going tomorrow, but without dressing up as am taking baby and husband, and did all the dressing up and socialising already on tuesday.
but it;s definitely worth going, for the experience - yes be prepared for terrible, terrible traffic and huge crowds, but it's a big, fairly open place, not like the narrow streets during semana santa. and the colour and music and atmosphere and spectacle are amazing. i just wrote an article on it for the telegraph in fact.

Hi Poollounger,
Nice to hear from you. So, this is where you have been hiding!
How has the intensive spanish language course fared?
Thank you for posting your experience of the feria.

Carol

Hi fififlores,
Thank you too for your post.
It's a funny old world , isn't it? Sevillanos and Madrilenos... so, what is new with city folk?
Could you PM me with news of when your article might appear in the paper?
Thanks again,
Regards,
Carol

Hi Carol

Not hiding...just got a bit bored with the forum...it has become so repetitive. The feria crowds are not so bad...certainly for someone familiar with London traffic. It is just a gigantic fair at heart. In spite of the drinking and the boisterousness, I have never seen anyone paralytic or throwing up or any violence. Fifi is right though..my Sevillano friends go in the early part of the week leaving the weekend to outsiders while they decamp to the beach.
The course was excellent...I just need to discipline myself into regular revision and working through the course material.. we couldn't cover every bit of it in the classroom. My Spanish friends were impressed, and gave me a real confidence boost.. they said that if I carried on progressing I could be fluent (ish) soon. It is so empowering to be able to speak and understand, though the extreme Andalucian accent still defeats me at times. A bit like a foreigner trying to decipher a Geordie accent I suppose!!

Hola!
Thanks, Fififlores, I have just spent an enjoyable hour reading your expat articles in the above link. (Congratulations on becoming a new mum!)
You raised several very interesting points on life in Sevilla/Spain, not criticisms as such, but astute observations. Ole!
Un saludo muy cordial,
Carol
