Whenever I see the “Spanish bull” I automatically think of those horrendous “bull fights” so no I do not think it’s a good idea surely the cost should go to other much needed issues?

Already have a couple of the metal ones with their added 'dangly bits' not that far from us anyway.
And why not, its part of Spain's heritage, the good and bad should be remembered and shown as it was.
Ok bull fighting is not a nice thing but have you been to the bull fighting museum in Murcia City?
It doesnt just celebrate the fighters but some of the great Bulls that took part (not all were killed you know).
Its an amazing place to visit and I came away with a better understanding of the whole thing. Would I go to one? No but I dont like football nor Rugby either.

I dont seem to remember anyone making judgmental comments about the big metal Bull that is now on show in Birmingham as a national symbol.

Seeing as the area was used for bull-baiting, a practice where a bull would be tethered to a ring and attacked by dogs for sport, before being slaughtered. The "ring" in question was an iron hoop in the Corn Cheaping (market area) where the bulls were tied

Same here. It's time to leave the bull in peace and focus on other symbols/ideas/etc...

So, if not the bull (that's recognised as "Spanish") what other symbol would be acceptable.
Personally I like the idea of the bull but not quite as big.

Yes I tend to agree with all these comments - and as to what other symbol, that is a good question, naturally I turned to Google:-

The Birmingham bull isn't a National symbol, just a symbol of the Bull Ring where it is placed, of much more interest to people visiting is the 'Floozie in the Jacuzzi' fountain.

I read somewhere recently that Burgos had been interested in the idea.
Not really on the tourist map other than its wonderful cathedral.
I think the bull fighting fraternity are getting desperate to try and stem dwindling popularity.
Having said that it's fiesta time in Bilbao and there is a 4 day corrida.

The difference in the bull sculpture in Birmingham to those that are in Spain. Is that it reflects English history whereas the bulls in Spain are drawing attention to what is a sad reality. I still find it difficult to understand why a country which professes to be .’modern thinking’ still supports such barbarity.

Because they aren't the same people. Bullfighting is in its dying days, this is just one of its death throes. The headline said "Spain" but that was misleading.

PP + Vox will try to recusitate it with defibrillation when they get in. I doubt they'll manage it but they'll throw a load of money at their chums trying to do it.

Very few areas in Spain still have bullfighting, it's a dying sport as more and more people see the cruelty

I agree with that view but although still going on in Spain bullfighting is still part of the history of Spain even in areas that have now banned it, the bull is a symbol of Spain which people recognise even though they may want bullfighting banished to the history books.

Bullfighting is alive and well down here in Andalucia and shows no signs of dying out. It is the Málaga Feria this week and the bullring is full every day. It’s the same in Granada and Sevilla.

No not having that, it’s okay to have a past history (good things are usually learnt from history) but to continue to have Bull fighting in this day and age, nope should not be happening

Someone I know (Spanish) said when he goes back home to Andalucía to visit he has to travel 500km and 50 years back in time.

Its popularity fell 63% between 2007 and 2019 (this article was published in 2020). And here on P9 you can see that it recovered after the pandemic but continued on a downward trajectory again.
