Was thinking the same, was just going to dig up this thread. Whichever country in the world is in trouble it seems to crash sterling

News said yesterday the pound was low because they think the 0.01% growth would be revised downwards. News today that the figure was revised upwards but the pound didn't go up! Look on the bright side a low pound is good for the country

There's some speculation that Godon's going to call the election for late March on Monday. Sounds unlikely I know, as Gordon so far has shown himself to bottle this type of decision, but the argument is the revised growth figures are as good as they're likely to get so better to have the election in March, rather than in May when the figures could be bad again. Markets don't like uncertainty so expect a bumpy ride. Cameron and Osborne have wobbled a bit on policy in recent weeks, so it's no longer assumed that the Tories will definitely win, in fact a lot of pundits are talking about a hung Parliament and some even think Labour will be the largest party. I can't see it myself, but you never know. And that's what will create uncertainty and volatility in the markets.

So the sooner they have the election the better for stability then????????? It seems labour have made some terrible mistakes during this recession, maybe they should do another term so that they have to be the ones to put it right??? ..... I dont believe I just wrote that

The current sterling situation is largely due to the incompetence of the socialist government in office, as seen before when the last labour government left a massive deficit in funds after a couple terms in charge and the Lib-Lab pact. And it will not get any better till a new government has been elected and gets on with getting the uk out of the crap it’s in at the moment, and gets the real truth about the various economies in the eu.

And which "new goverment" would that beDon't tell me the tories
Given that this crisis was caused by the banks and not any goverment the answer is more regulation of the banking system by whichever goverment.

There has never been a Lib-Lab pact. So I suppose the Labour Government also runs Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the USA as well. The fact that California is bankrupt must be Gordon´s fault. I also remember the last Tory government with interest rates of 15%, was it Black Monday or Black Wednesday? Whole hospital wards being closed, the mines and steelyards being closed never to re-open. Everything being sold off to the highest bidder which is why water rates are now horrendous as we have to pay share holders their dividends. I also wouldn´t call New Labour socialist far from it.

That was the last recession and it was simply reflecting the shift from hardcore industry and was turned into the "black" fiasco by the government and the unions both trying to win a power struggle. Maggie was also trying to introduce a new type of economy (good or bad??). Those pits that didnt re-open were never meant to. The country didnt need them anymore - Good heavens, if they'd stayed what would the UK carbon footprint have been like today. BTW, I'm not taking sides on it - I didnt understand it all at the time. But my dad was a pit man altho he'd retired due to ill health by the time all that was going on, I know he was glad to see them close and was never on the side of Arthur Scargill - he used to shout at him when he came on the TV LOL

That is why we now import coal from Europe. Whole areas went into depression and have never recovered. Now we don´t make anything because of Maggie.

Yes British Leyland was a world leading company when it was run by Red Robbo.
The docks were thriving (well the dockers were) as you waited, and waited, and waited to try and get the load.
British Telecom could get your phone installed in less than a couple of months & if it went wrong a lad would call in the ?, next week.

Yup Maggie came along and buggered all the above up in very short order, ermmm ?
Has not Tony bLair not been in office for a bit ? & not forgetting his pension stealing oppo Gordo.
