Hello, I'm a 3rd year journalism student in Sunderland University in North England and I‘am looking for a possible career in Spain. For my final year I have to do a work placement or work experience at a newspaper.I am learning Spanish in university, but probably not good enough to be a journalist level yet, unless it involves ordering food or describing my house. If anyone could give the details of any English speaking newspaper in Spain that make take me on that would be great.

Get a list of contacts and then send them your CV and Covering letter

Gracias i did that a while back, i heard this would be a good place to advertise. I have contacted all the obvious ones. Can you suggest any lesser known ones that i might have missed? cheers for your help

Try El Pais in English. Also, why not contact people such as Giles Tremlett (Guardian Spanish correspondent) or John Carlin (columnist writes for El Pais, brought up bi-lingual I believe).
But then , being a 3rd year journalism student, you ought to know these names, surely??!!

Yes i do and i have contacted them already, this thread was just in case an editors read these forums and could offer me something. It was also to help find any smaller regional papers that i might have missed through Google. Thank you for your help

You could try Liz Parry, Editor of Sur in English (free weekly edition in English of Diario Sur, based in Malaga). However, I think most English language publications in Spain take most of their material from articles published originally in Spanish, and would therefore require you to be able to translate from Spanish to English.

Good theory. Eats shoots and leaves, etc......... Internet from mobiles probably put paid to that theory, though.

I doubt either would be able to offer a salary unless you're willing/capable of chasing advertisers. Most Expat media is based on the south coast where most of the expats are.

does it have to be newspaper journalism ?
have you considered advertising etc ??

aren't pretty much all of the English language 'newspapers' just advertising media with a bit of blurb in between, now??

well as you said earlier, they regurgitate the Spanish press reports having (sometimes poorly IMHO) translated to English. Same goes for the free newspapers etc.

my line of thinking was Advertising Agencies, not too many down south but quite a few in the Madrid and Barcelona area.
or am I being too simplistic with my definition of "Journalism" ??

I know this is supposed to be a Crisis, but even back in the UK there has been the same problem - money not coming in Cut Advertising!!
Surely that is the last thing to do ?
