I have no idea what it stands for but it is a unique 22 digit number that identifies you. It stays with you even if you change suppliers.
On the Endesa bill it is shown with all your other personal data.

That's the problem...I have never had a printed receipt, I pay by direct debit but have never seen a paper bill. I thought that if I went online and registered then I would have an idea of what's going on.

Unfortunately you cannot register without a bill as it asks for data from the last bill as a security measure.

Hmmm how daft is that!
I have just sent an e mail to the bank asking if they have anything to give me, and the original solicitor who set it up. keeping fingers crossed.
many thanks for your help.

It doesn't have to be the last bill but it helps ! I registered using a one year old bill it took about three working days for them to do some checks and then access was granted.

For example, a block of flats will have several CUPS into the main meter cupboard.

thank you for that, where would it be though, we are just one house, but there are others nearby?

It will be on a previous bill (which, I presume doesn't help you) or it can be traced by calling the previous supplier and quoting your reference number.

Go to the nearest Endesa office with as much info as you have, your passport and NIE, and ask them to print out your latest bill so that you can register on line. Then hope and pray that the online system is actually working for long enough to do what ever you need to do.

I pay by D/D with La Caixa for my electricity.
If you do, open up your account & then look @ an Endesa payment.
It doesn't show the CUPS reference number but the Contrato acceso number (11 numbers in our case) which is also included on the Endesa's paper bill , just after the CUPS ref. number is
This info . may make your task easier ? who knows in Spain
If you take to the Endesa office or your bank it could help
