Can't see it working in the hotter South . Even here in the north it gets pretty hot in the summer, though obviously not continually like in the south. On the other hand, in many Middle Eastern & tropical countries the heat doesn't affect working schedules. Personally I'd love to be able to go to Bilbao to arrive at 9am if the shops were to open then, rather than at present have to wait till 10am & then rush round before they shut at 1 -1.30pm. And then of course there's the potential change from CET to GMT. I reckon it's just too much change to ask of the Spanish. No government would dare broach it. |
Re: End of the Siesta?
I once did a short assignment at OAMI in Alicante (European Trade Marks Office). They had just had a new director fresh from Brussels HQ Directorate and he was keen to align OAMI with Brussels working hours for obvious business reasons. The result was that although the staff started at 08:00 they took at least a 2 1/2 hour lunch break (and took me to one or two very nice restos !) and then finished at 17:30.
I'm sure they will have sorted it out by now but it goes to show the unexpected consequences of change. |
