As for your theory, I think you may well be right. I would still be inclined to change the RCD to eliminate that device as being the problem. That's cheaper than changing the oven!

Depends on the oven and if you can get spares - I've changed the elements on 2 ovens, one was a fan oven and the element behind the fan went and the other the top element (which doubles as the grill) went. Both were very simple to access and change. If the element is under the bottom then you'd have to see f the bottom plate is removable or else you would need to be able to get at the element from underneath which is a lot more tricky but doable to a competent DIYer. You don't need any electrical skills (as long as you can turn off the oven completely, most oven circuits should be on a double pole switch) as the elements are usually plug in.

BTW I did get the Bosch horno y placa as per your recommendation Fred. (qv thread)

Thanks all. The washing machine started tripping it this morning. . Left it till this evening and washing machine is running fine. Spoke to an electrician and he seemed to think it's probably not the rcd just earth leakage but going back to blighty so will book him for next visit. Annoying that washing machine is fine in the evenings when not in the sun. Doesn't make sense. I may well just need a few new appliances Or have a fault somewhere else. It's a puzzle for sure.

I'm afraid that when my 10 yr old washing machine started tripping the RCD it was new machine time - much appreciated by the OH.

Interesting what you say about it failing when the sun is on it. Is the machine in direct sunlight? Maybe there's a wire inside which is too close to the casing and the insulation is breaking down in the heat, metal can get very hot in direct sun. Maybe a quick look inside the casing and moving the wires about - or shield the machine from the sun might be a quick interim fix, who knows.
