Electricity supplies-new rules and market place.

Surprised no one has written about this before, but you can change your electricity supplier if you want to. It is a bit complicated so I will give you a link (in Spanish) and a précis of the new regulations; this will also save me copywriting, which is against the rules.
  • A new law was made dated 3 April and numbered 485/2009
  • If the power supply to your house is less than 10kw then the government and the Juntas will set the price you pay per unit. This will be the same for all companies all over Spain.
  • At the moment companies are limited to which areas they can supply. So you have to read who supplies your area.
  • You must change company before the 1 July 2009.
  • It seems (and I am looking for confirmation on this) that one company will own the infrastructure and you only purchase the electricity from the supplier.
  • It seems that if you wish to change it is free of charge and stoppages.
  • Bills are likely to go up!!!!
  • The article gives contact numbers and websites for more details, plus other incidental information.
  • It is said this is the first step to a fully liberalised market place.
Link one information about supplies below 10kw.

Link two for supplies above 10kw.

We had a letter to that effect yesterday but my understanding of the letter was that all suppliers had to charge the same for usage (as per your second point). This being the case, why change supplier? What and where are the potential savings?

As we understand it it is a step forward to the liberalisation of the market place...we have over 10 kw so we can change straight way.

What sort of deals are there for 10kw+ ?

Are you on the off peak tariff?

I cannot find out much from the Endesa site apart from the TUR tariffs.

Fred,

That is the 1000 dollar (Euro) question. It seems you have to read all of the websites of each individual company for a deal. It is pointed out in item two of link two given in the original posting.
As it stands this law seems like a real fudge, hopefully we do not get the same problems as in January of this year where bills were sent out with erroneous totals. Or we do not end up with a similar situation to that that happened in the U.K. where companies cold called households and then proceeded to change your supply company without permission.
