It's still a status thing. I know people who shop at Primark etc and then put their purchases in a Corte Inglés carrier bag ...

I was fooled into buying some socks from there. They got holes in them after one wash

Re: El Corte Inglés
This often happens when the feet are bigger than the socks. For how many weeks did you wear them before washing? How does one get fooled into buying socks? Do tell us more.

I buy socks and shoes in Scandinavia, made to last as well as keep the feet warm.
Never yet found a thing in Spain to even fit, they all appear to be made for midgets.

I tried to find size 13 running shoes last year in Spain, went to lots of shops, the largest size was 9/10. I didn't complain, I based it off the Spanish system and population. So, I ordered some off Amazon.

Re: El Corte Inglés
That's a bit derogatory, rather sounds like a typical foreigner living in Spain..... But hey - the Spanish shops sells clothing to suit their local tables / average native clients. ( go figure )

now socks -- commiserate DD, I don't like most socks as the nylon at the tops is too tight, made for people with matchstick ankles - which is neither Spanish or British.

Simply stating a fact.
That's the way it is and I've always accepted it, doesn't mean I'm not allowed to mention it, exactly as you have just done yourself.
Much the same applies to many other things, so I always come well prepared anyway.
Maybe you are being derogatory with your "typical foreigner living in Spain" remark.
How would you know how a typical foreigner in Spain behaves, unless of course you've personally researched many hundreds of thousand of people, but somehow I doubt that is the case ?
You mention the Spanish only selling to suit their own clientele.
Fair enough if that's what they want to do, but in many tourist/expat areas they're missing out on a lucrative market, as others have mentioned previously.
Once again not complaining, that's their loss and problem, not mine.

It is possible to buy some cheap ones without the elastic, but generally they are very thin and rubbish quality.
Alternatively I prefer heavy ones with wool incorporated, which often come without the elastic restriction.
If I do see some good ones with elastic incorporated, I buy them anyway and then spend about 15 minutes clipping, picking and pulling out the elastic.

Re: El Corte Inglés
Apparently, sock thieves sneak into our house at night and steal just one of hubbies' cheap socks. Happens all the time.
