As the owner of a £38,000 car, I can't get the similarity between an expensive car and an over priced restaurant, the car will last me 10 years, 38,000 divided by 3,650 days = 10,41 per day, one meal at the overpriced restaurant = 300e per day, where's the comparison???????????????

Spain and the Spanish are very image conscious. When you can afford it, in certain circles it's almost needed to be seen in the right clothes, with the right people and in the right places. El Buli serves up award, innovative, world class leading food.

You dont go to El Bulli everyday. You'd go once it a lifetime, maybe once a year if you're lucky.

And food isnt just about value for money, it's an emotional experience as indeed driving can be too :)

btw I have a battered old Seat thats worth about 2k euros but I'd happily spend 100 euros for a very special restaurant. Just depends what your priorities are in life.

Just seen Madridboy's post. I believe many Brits and Americans fly to Spain just to go to El Bulli, then they fly straight back, its definitely not just for Spaniards.

However, I agree that generally Spanish people would prefer to eat in the best restaurants and have good clothes rather than have a big house or latest TV. Well in the North of Spain anyway, not so much in Andalucia, sometimes I think they are more like the Brits :)

Just asked OH this one. Apparently he does this because the restaurant area is changed every season (year) which requires time for designers to come up with ideas before he chooses the one he will want. Also all the cutlery, glasses, plates, napkins, etc. are changed and they seek out new designs for all of these. Also the staff (who are still paid all year round) need to learn and improve on new etiquette and languages. He and his kitchen staff are also learning and developing new dishes and coming up with new ideas for a new menu.

I know people who wear nice new clothes everday, go to all the "right" bars in the Salamanca area of Madrid and will chat people up saying about how close they live in this area. The fact is they eat cheap, crap food and live in a cheap area but as said, image is important in certain areas.

I have a friend who lives in Salamanca, early 30s, and lives in the same building as one of the princesses. Pays 5k/month rent. Can't say they eat crap though.

I get your point, but there are also lots of well off people out there who can afford that kind of lifestyle. I've seen it in London, Madrid and Barcelona.

I don't really care if it is worth 285€ or not. Going to El Bulli is on my '50 things do to before I die' list and it'll stay there until I can tick it off.

Besides, the restaurants are dire around here and I think I deserve a bit of bloody decent nosh for a change!

Do they live on Jorge Juan? I know there are some members of the royal family that live there, I live 2 streets over from them.....(it's a big area so I don't think I'm giving out too much personal info....and I'm moving this month!)

Apparently Feran Adria has dismissed the claim in the media that he is closing down permanently after next year.

I think the biggest tell tale sign is this line..."El Mundo reports that Adrià ’s patron’s sons are starting legal action to claim 20% of the business"

Nothing avoids the courts better than a name change, a liquidation and a complete re invention....
