EHIC For Pensioners

I have an EHIC which was issued when I became a UK pensioner. It is due to expire in March. Can't find out any information on whether I will automatically be sent a new one or whether I have to apply for it.

you have to apply for a new one. You can phone the overseas healthcare team or use this S1/EHIC RENEWAL

Tried to complete the form but it didn't allow me to input on to it!

Thanks for both your replies. Will try phoning or emailing.

I have copied and pasted their reply to me. Hope this makes it clear:thumbup:

Dear

Thank you for your email regarding the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

By replying to this email and providing the following information you are declaring that you have a valid S1/E121 which was issued to you from the country you currently reside in, due to you receiving an exportable UK benefit

An exportable UK benefit is any long-term UK benefit (e.g. State Retirement Pension) which can be continued to be paid to someone who moves outside the UK to live. For further information please contact Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) on 0191 218 7777.

If you do meet the above criteria then we can renew your EHIC via email, please reply with the following information:
• Reconfirm your first line of address
• Are your circumstances still the same as when you last applied for your EHIC? (Yes/No)
•If not please tell us about your change in circumstances:

For any general enquiries, please use our 'Ask Us' page at NHS Business Services Authority or visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/NHSBSAEurope...InsuranceCard; if you require any further assistance please contact us by email or telephone us on 0300 330 1350.

Yours sincerely,

Misba Afzal

Hola

About a month ago, out of the blue and without asking, I received a new EHIC card. No idea why as I am on the system here in Spain and thought I had to apply here in Spain for a card to cover me when I go abroad!

No, British Citizens MUST get their EHIC card from the UK, a change made several years ago.

I'm a British citizen and I get my EHIC from my country of residence and always have.

It comes from the UK if you are in receipt of a state pension.

If you are registered on the Spanish health system as a result of working in Spain, or are claiming a Spanish pension, as opposed to being an S1 holding pensioner, you still apply for a TSE (Spanish equivalent of the EHIC) in Spain.

I am in receipt of a UK state pension and my EHIC does not come from the UK it comes from the country of my residence.

Re: EHIC For Pensioners

I believe that changed Fred. Certainly my original one came when I got my pension. But don't suppose it really matters as long as you are covered for illness when you visit the UK. It certainly covered me when I had to visit a walk in centre.

Re: EHIC For Pensioners

Chiclanagir is right, as a UK pensioner you now get the EHIC from UK it changed quite recently, I was about to get it here but it dropped through the post, having just been in touch hence the link, rather confirms where it comes from, they do have a very good FB page where if in doubt ask, but mine is on the way (hopefully) :fingerscrossed:

Yes but you don't live in Spain. The rules may well be different if you live in Gibraltar due to its status as a BOT.

All the info was in the pasted email I put on here, as we pensioners used an S1 they need a yes or no to that answer and also frst line of our address and has anytihng changed simple yes or no, but it is only for UK pensioners in receipt of a pension etc. UK is resposable for our EHIC in fact the nice lady that I spoke to on FB called it EHICE told her our only has EHIC on she swore it will work should we need it,

Chiclangir, you can emil that adress they want all the details from it, add your address and they send you what I have pasted here, simple

Fred J my original response was in reply to the post below.

There are many British citizens who do not and cannot get an EHIC from the UK

Very true, but they can usually get one from their country of residence if they qualify for local healthcare.

The OP was about UK pensioners, and the post I made saying that they now had to get their EHIC cards from the UK was totally valid.

No, you referred to UK citizens, not just pensioners.

Re: EHIC For Pensioners

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is issued by the country that insures you for healthcare.

As a UK state pensioner, resident in Spain and with a registered pensioner S1 form (issued by the International Pension Centre in the UK) to access public healthcare in Spain, the UK covers you for healthcare (through your UK state pension) and therefore the UK is responsible for issuing you with a UK EHIC.

You will need to contact the Overseas Healthcare Team in Newcastle on 0044 191 218 1999 in order to renew a UK EHIC. This is free of charge but is not an automatic process; you will need to apply and an application form will then be sent out to your Spanish address in the post. Please note that the online service is not available to those living abroad.

This info is not accurate for anyone who has an EHIC card that has not expired but was issued to a UK address. If you have a UK issued card and wish to update when you become resident in Spain,be prepared for an expensive series of phone calls.

I became resident in Spain last June, My EHIC expired in November, I phoned Newcastle and was told they would send me a new card to Spain to use if I should take ill when visiting the UK, the card took a few weeks to arrive, I was told if I was going to the UK before I had my new card to ring the telephone number they provided as I would be covered,,

Re: EHIC For Pensioners

I followed the instructions as above and after a couple of emails forwards and backwards my new EHIC arrived.

You can't.

If you are a UK pensioner, follow the advice above.

If you are not a UK pensioner, then you can get a TSE from Spain provided you are in employment.

Re: EHIC For Pensioners

It's far simpler to just phone them.
Your cards will be posted
Ours arrived in just over a week
