Dusty pool
 

Recently I had trouble clearing the pool, so decided to change the sand in the filter.

Since then whenever I hoover, I get some of the pool bottom dust pumped back out thru the jets whist the hoover is going. The pool surface has a fine dust sheen on it.
So after a day it settles and the whole vicious circle starts again.

Pool water is crystal clear but pool bottom is brown.


Any idea what has gone wrong ? - I bought pool sand and emptied by hand all the old sand, refilling to same level I think.

Try giving the filter a prolonged backwash to clear any small particles

As Fred says, it could simply be dusty sand so backwash. On the other hand (and I had this until I realised what it was) it could be algae. I called in someone because I thought sand was getting into the pool. It turned out that the dust on the bottom was simply algae.

I shocked the pool with chlorine, used algicide and pumped/backwashed - it was soon gone but the egg on my face remained:o

Try hoovering to waste. I do that all the time.

Are you sure it is not the sand blowing through ?

If you have broken or dislodged one of the pipes that the sand is around it could well be the problem, try and catch some of the stuff coming out of the jet.

Thought I would just update the thread with the final solution.
I called one of the pool companies advertising in the free papers (guess I cant give name here)
Man called me back in a couple of minutes and immediately suggested the problem. He made no attempt to offer a callout charge / visit. Just was happy to help solve my problem for free.

When I changed the sand, I had buried the thin plastic air breather tube and as such it was sucking sand back into pool on hoover.

Pity JDR did not read it properly as the prevoius suggestion was a problem with the pipes at the base of the unit NOT the air breather tube

This is usually caused by dislodging the pipe, but I did not imagine anyone would ever put too much sand in the filter causing the same problem.
Idiot replies like yours are spoiling this forum, if you cannot help then keep quiet instead of posting rubbish.

I said that the problem was sand going back into the pool, (which it was) mainly caused by what i described, You would not expect anyone to fill the tank too high with sand.
But don`t worry about it as I won`t bother trying to help either of you again.

I nearly posted last night, thought better of it, but frankly there's no need for this. There aren't enough hours in the day for anyone to comment on everyone's postings, so that jibe is unnecessary. I think by coming up with a (reasonably accurate) suggestion jdr was trying to help, or am I being stupidly naive in that? Further than that, well saying someone else (he) had suggested the possible cure earlier, in a light hearted banter type way is hardly a crime is it?
And as for the suggested cure not being precisely the right pipe in precisely the right location within a sand filter is the kind of error I'd be glad to receive as advice - if I thought outside the box as a result, I or my friends/neighbours might have come up with the answer ourselves.:)

Pff, i did read and answered with a correct diagnosis that a pipe had possibly been dislodged and sand was being sent back into the pool. :rolleyes::rolleyes:
