Default Driving through France to UK

We are driving back to UK in December for a holiday. We will be travelling up through spain from alicante and then intend going via Bordeaux, Poitirs, Rouen and then to eurotunnel Calais
I got a route from RAC and its without tolls.
However, anyone got any tips or suggestions about route planners? We dont have a TomTom.
Also, places to stay enroute? We think we will stop just the once around Chateraullet
All suggestions gratefully received!

You can avoid all tolls but sometimes I find it false ecconomy. It is much easier and quicker to take the AP7.

Did it in March from Uk to Andalucia, 3 days, 1500 miles using the Western France route.

first of all suggest you balance up using either the Western route you have indicated or the Eastern route which you may find easier considering your location
http://about-france.com/routes-from-calais.htm
you will also find links there to hotels adjacent to the main routes

We arranged to get to Calais via the chunnel at about 6pm and stayed overnite in a Travelodge type nearby, so loads of food places a short walk away
Down thru Rouen, Le Mans, Tours, Poitiers, overnighting in Angouleme - much larger than is indicated, hotels at the north end adjacent to restaurants and also 3 automatic petrol stations on adjacent trading\industrial estate.
Down to Bordeaux, San Sebastian, Pamplona, Zaragoza, overnight in motorway hotel near Calatayud.
Then on to Madrid, and south towards Cordoba.

Whatever you do - do not go near the western side of Zaragoza - miles and miles and miles of road works, no delays but lane restrictions, poor roads, horrendous

the only overnite booked was at Calais, the others were just walk in and ask, but no rejections even though we had a (small) dog with us..

yes we did some toll roads, but there had to be a balance to maintaining the target of 500 miles per day. not fast but it was doable without feeling shattered when sitting down for dinner ...

please pm me if u want any further info

For pure convenience, I've used the motorway from almost on my doorstep all the way to Calais, stopping for an overnight stay halfway through France. The tolls are expensive, but I prefer long-distance motorway driving to dodging tolls.

We drove from Almeria to calais 3 years ago, using motorways (tolls) all the way. It cost around 95Euros each way.
I expect it has gone up since then.

It was €130 in tolls from Gandia to Calais last time we did it. But it takes two days driving and it's hassle free, especially on the Eastern route where you can easily avoid the Road to Hell (Paris) If we did that with non toll roads I'm guessing it would add quite some time on

It may be worth you pricing up the ferry from Santander or Bilbao, weather can be bad in December, and its a long boring drive through France, the ferry is quite reasonable in winter, and 24 hours on the ferry is more appealing, in a nice bed, just my thoughts !

We used to do France, but don't find the savings worth the long haul.

I did look at ferries but as the previous person says - they dont run!
There has been some helpful stuff here and I feel more able to make a judgement on routes.
The non-toll route going from Alicante, Zaragoza, Bordeaux, Poitiers, Tours, Rouen and Calais is about 20 hours and no charges so that seems doable!

I think you might be being a bit optimistic at 20 hours driving. I've just done your route on Google Maps and it says 24 hours (no tolls). Admittedly I do my route from Estepona to Calais in a bit less than Google says but I use tolls. My experience of google is that it is very good at estimating journey times on motorways but it underestimates on minor roads. I'm guessing they calculate using the speed limits which is all very well on motorways - you can keep up 120kph easy but - try keeping to 90kph on minor roads.

I will be interested to hear how you get on...

I've got my doubts on that. On the motorway I do about 10 hours on the first day and that gets me to Valence. Then its a full day to get to Calais, and thats driving at not so slow speeds.

When we came down the West coast from St Malo iirc we left about 8 am and got just past Bordeaux by about 5.30. Then it was another full days drive to get to Gandia (however we did go through the Pyranees)

don't do it..stay on the motorway past Bordeaux and pay the tolls. I did Malaga to Luxembourg on that Bordeaux - Poitiers road a couple of years ago it's not as straightforward as it seems. If you do you will find a head on speed camera entering most villages/settlements en route so do not forget to slow down at every 50 km/h sign (not that they get you for it, I set them all off and not heard anything since). It's also not that interesting scenery wise either so if it is purely a cost saving exercise I'm really not sure it is one you'll appreciate doing and as people have already mentioned a false economy
