Re: driving from liverpool (uk) to santa susanna
Coming from the far North I always head to Portsmouth, slightly shorter and quicker than to Dover.
Then being due for a break, the overnight ferry Portsmouth/St Malo is ideal for a good nights rest in a cabin.
From St Malo it is an easy, quiet run down to Bayonne near the border and overnight in an Etap motel or similar, handy, cheap enough, clean and fairly secure.
From Bayonne its an even easier run on the new road mostly toll free, past Zaragossa, to just past Valencia usually by 3pm.
It may cost a few euros extra, but well worth it to have such a comfortable easy journey.
Unfortunately the St Malo ferry doesn't run overnight for the return trip so I usually settle for the Santander ferry, giving me a nice break before the trip back up to the frozen North.
