I sometimes wear glasses when I drive but I passed my medical without them. I am still confused about whether or not I'll need a "fresh" medical cert. to exchange my licence - I think I'll try another gestor, if he says the same then so be it.

I changed my DL from a UK one to a Spanish one in June last year at the age of 64 I was never asked for a medical. We went to Valencia Trafico as I understand it I do ot need a medical until my next renewal in 2014

You only need a medical certificate if you are exchanging close to your 70th birthday - apart from that you don't need one.
If you are using a Spanish gestor they often assume, wrongly, that you will need a medical certificate - they send it in and Trafico bin it.

In the Euro weekly news last week the question about medical certificates was asked to the local policeman that does a question and answer part in it said as far as he knows all that is required when asked by the officer is your DL, your car paperwork, insurance and an up to date ITV sticker.
The only certificate he knew about was one that covers pregnant women and disabled people that were unable to wear a seat belt.

I say this because the info did not include needing to have your insurance with you (an error in the above post) as that info (re Spanish companies) is now available to the police on line.

I emailed the editor when that was published but she did not show any correction in last week's edition, but then the EWN is notorious for publishing contradictory info even in the same edition, and their attitude is that if they print something which is wrong 'someone' will write in to correct it. Very irresponsible, especially as it normally take them at least two weeks to publish a letter, so by then the mis-information has been disseminated wide and far.

I think it was apparent that the info related to the holders of Spanish DLs.

The question was for residents or non residents driving in Spain and his answer was "In Spain drivers are not required to carry a medical certificate" and the only certificate he knows about is the seatbelt one.

Re: Driving Licences and medical certs.
Well JDR we all know if he did mean all D/L he was wrong, if we don't we will start this whole thing again about the need to carry a medical cert, and please lets not go there, again !
Lets also remember, if this person actually exists and isn't yet another 'invented person' by EWN, then he is a local police officer, and we know they are not 'real police' but employees of the town hall dealing with parking, licensing, noise etc. When they arrest anyone they take them to the Real Police, National or Guardia, where the real police even write their arrest statement for them, as they do with any member of the public. Even the real police often do not know the law unless one asked a person employed in the dept which specialises in the matter which you need to know about.
But as I said, I say this because the info did not include needing to have your insurance with you. That info CAN ONLY APPLY to insurance with Spanish companies ( now available to the police on line).
As I said, this is just the latest example of total irresponsibility by the management of EWN, in not checking the info (maybe excused in this case) and when an error is discovered, not correcting it in the next edition, as Sur in English do.
