Default DRIVIG LICENCES.

For everyone panicking about getting an appointment by the end of the year to change your driving licence.....Relax.
See this news from the DGT....Basically you register your details, wait 3 days to hear from them, and if everything is in order you have until 30 June to make an appointment to exchange it without having to take a test.
You MUST register your details by the end of this year though.

Here is the link....sorry it´s all in Spanish

You do know you can change the language to english in the top right of the page....

Anyway here it is BUT all of this will only work IF the DVLA confirm your drivers details BEFORE the end of December.
Also the office closes on the 24th until the 1st Jan so wont be no use putting in the form on the 26th.The United Kingdom will effectively cease to belong to the European Union as of December 31, 2020 , so all traffic agreements within the EU will no longer be valid for holders of driving licenses issued by the UK.

Licenses from the United Kingdom will only be valid for driving in Spain during the first 6 months after BREXIT , being necessary if you are a resident in our country to continue driving there, request the exchange, renewal or replacement of your UK license for the Spanish equivalent until December 30, 2020. In this way you will be able to exchange, renew or replace your UK permit for the Spanish equivalent under the same conditions prior to BREXIT, without having to wait for the signing of a new one agreement between countries, nor have to obtain a new Spanish driving license.

To request the exchange you must meet the following requirements:
  • Be the holder of a UK driving license.
  • Have the habitual residence in Spain.
  • Submit the completed application until December 30, 2020 .
You must take into account that:
  • Applications submitted after December 30, 2020 will not be processed.
  • Within the application period, only permits that have been verified by the UK authorities before January 1, 2021 will be exchanged, replaced or renewed, with two possibilities:
    • If the permit is verified on time by the authorities of the United Kingdom and it is verified that the required requirements are met: you will have a period of 6 months from January 1, 2021 to make it effective:
      • Three business days after submitting the request, if we have not contacted you, you can request your prior appointment . At the time of making an appointment you must indicate in 'Type of procedure': "Office procedures" and later in 'Area' the area of your headquarters referring to drivers .
      • During this 6-month period, valid and valid British driving licenses will be admitted to drive in Spain.
    • If the permit is not verified by the UK authorities as valid to carry out the exchange, replacement or renewal before January 1, 2021 , or any of the other requirements necessary for the exchange are not met , the process will be considered completed . In this case, those interested will be able to continue driving with their British license for 6 months. Deadline from January 1, 2021. After this period, British licenses will not be valid to drive in Spain and, if their holders wish to continue doing so, they must obtain a Spanish driving license , after checking the requirements and passing the the corresponding tests.
Remember: You must make the extraordinary request for exchange, renewal or replacement until December 30, 2020 .

And you can only do all of this if you have either a digital certificate or use the clave system (Im doing mine through a Gestor)

No guarantee that it will help but personally if I were still in the position of needing to exchange my licence I'd be ordering a Certificate of Entitlement from DVLA, this is official validation of your licence and entitlements and is essentially what DGT will be doing albeit probably not by phoning DVLA and paying a £5 fee which is what individuals have to do.

As I say no guarantees that if it did come down to it it would cut any ice with DGT but on the other hand it could possibly turn out to be the best fiver you ever spent!

Default Re: DRIVIG LICENCES.

Just got this from UK Embassy Madrid:-

As you may be aware, yesterday the Spanish authorities introduced a new protocol for UK Nationals wanting to exchange their UK driving licence for a Spanish one before the end of the Transition Period.

We would be grateful if you would share the below post from our Facebook channel or publish the text, so that UK Nationals are aware of the new arrangements.

As you know, one of the key actions for UK Nationals living in Spain is to exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one, but recently a lack of appointments has made this difficult. Therefore, to speed up the licence exchange and ensure UK Nationals can begin the process before the end of the year, the DGT has put a new system in place which went live on their website yesterday.

It is a two-step process. The first step is to make an application to the DGT before 30 December. You can do this via their online portal if you have a digital certificate/CLAVE or by calling 060. In some provinces it may also be possible to do so by downloading the form and taking it to your local office, though you may wish to ring ahead to confirm this. You can also ask a representative (eg a gestor) to do this on your behalf. We understand that for this part of the process you do not need to have a residency certificate or TIE, but you will need a NIE.

If you do not hear anything from the DGT in the meantime, three days after submitting your application you can request an appointment with the DGT to do the exchange. This should be booked on the DGT’s website.

As long as your application has been submitted before 30 December, and the UK authorities have verified your licence by the end of the year, your appointment to exchange your licence can be after 1 January 2021, provided it is within the first 6 months of next year. Please note that you will need a residency certificate/TIE to do final exchange, so if you are in the process of applying for residency you may want to choose a later date for your appointment.

Irrespective of whether a UK licence has been verified for exchange by the end of the year, you will be able to drive in Spain using your UK licence for 6 months from 1 January 2021. The future rules on exchange and recognition of UK licences are still subject to negotiation.

For more information and a link to the online application form visit: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/permisos-de-conducir/canje-permisos/canje-permisos-extranjeros/canje-renovacion-sustitucion-uk/index.shtml?Reino%20Unido. Please note that you can change the site’s language to English by selecting it in the drop-down menu in the top right hand corner of the page.

Sorry...I didn´t know you could translate the page into English.

I think you need a Digital signature or a Cl@ve to do it........and I can´t get a digital signature on my iMac....too technical for me.
And the Cl@ve ...you have to make an appointment at a Registry Office to prove ID....and it´s difficult to get an appointment.

Luckily I have done my Driving Licence......Got an appointment with the DGT at the end of September and my licence arrived about 4 weeks later.

You do need to prove ID for a certificate but when I got a cl@ve you applied online and got a letter with the codes to get it.

it’s very easy to use with an app on your phone.

Yet more from UK Embassy Madrid.-FURTHER INFORMATION ON DRIVING LICENCE EXCHANGE

Following our post earlier this week, we are aware that there has been some confusion around obtaining an appointment under the new process for exchanging driving licences, so we wanted to clarify the steps you need to take once you have submitted your initial request to the DGT. Please see our previous post (
) for information on how to do this first part and the general principles of the new process.

Once you have made your initial request, you must wait three days before trying to book an appointment online, in case the DGT needs to contact you in the meantime. Once three days have passed, use the following link to book your appointment: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/…/otros-tram…/cita-previa-jefaturas/. This takes you to a further page where you need to click on the first icon on the top left “solicitud de cita previa”. You will then need to follow the instructions as set out on the DGT’s main page detailing the new process: select your office and under “Tipo de Tramite” select “Tramites de Oficina” not canjes de permiso. You should then click 'continuar' under the section for ‘conductores’.

In some offices you may still not be able to get an appointment straight away, but remember that as long as you have submitted your application by 30 December, you have the first six months of next year in which to get your appointment to exchange your licence.

But as clearly shown on the DGT site is the following. If you apply on the 30th December the below will happen and you will be taking a spanish test (unless of course the UK/Spain agree some form of licence exchange process as Spain does with other non EU countries)

If the permit is not verified by the UK authorities as valid to carry out the exchange, replacement or renewal before January 1, 2021 , or any of the other requirements necessary for the exchange are not met , the process will be considered completed .

I gave this info from the Uk embassy to our solicitor on monday and they logged in with three digital get and told me the form asks for proof of residency (which is no good to those of us who are struggling to get sorted before the end of Dec)
Our paperwork for residency was submitted online to Alicante yesterday but the average wait for its approval (and a reference number that might be able to be used for the exchange) could be around 4 to 6 weeks.

The crazy thing is that Spanish licences will remain exchangeable in UK so no similar deadline exists for Spanish citizens living there.

I think it will change. They just need to add the UK to the "Convenio" list. This is the sort of thing that should get sorted out unilaterally after the Brexit dust settles.

Agreed. But how long will it take for the dust to settle?
In the mean time people like me may end up driving around without a licence if it goes beyond July 2021.

Im still hopeful that I can get the process started as I was informed yesterday that an NIE is all that is required to use the online form (as I don't have digital sig or clave) I'm going to get the solicitor on it.

Watch out the cost. Around here, a gestor will charge around 140€ and an avogado around 200€ (including IVA).
