Bruce Lee said a lot of things in his short time, but 1 thing he always said was maintain your training. I would rather work with someone who trained for the rough end of the job as well as the smoothing out end.
As in tennis you need to be good at returning the ball as well as serving the ball

I know what you mean, we used to coach gymnastics, most of the best were streetwise tough kids. ;-)
