I found a link of how it's done in Alicante Province,but does anybody know of the procedure in Valencia?

I am also interested in this option. I would also be interested to know how to be entered on the organ donor list (if there is one).

I was on the list in UK but can't find how to do it here.

I think I can now start giving blood here as I've been out of the UK for 6 years so should be free of any "mad cow disease"! How can I find where and when to donate?

My OH has never been allowed to give blood here in spite of having been a vegetarian for over 20 years before moving away from the UK, so not at risk from mad cow disease.

Hi

I attended a British Consulate event yesterday where leaving your body to science was discussed.

Point A was that at the time of death, they don´t have to accept your body (they may have too many already)

Point B was that they can not accept your body if you have had an operation with the last two years.

I can't give blood either, despite living in Spain for 12 years. The rule is that if you lived in the UK in the late 1980s you are considered a "mad cow" risk!

As far as I know Spain is opt-out for organ donation so unless your family specify otherwise, your organs can be re-used.

What was the outcome of your discussion with the British Council Davexf? Do they have a right to use your body for research if they need to, unless you opt out?

I do not think that there is an organ donor list here. Your organs are up for grabs unless you carry something saying otherwise or if your family stop them, at least that is my understanding of the situation.

The Event organised by the British Consulate included a talk by a funeral director. I can not remember all the details - but the donation of your body was discussed in a way that suggested it was an option rather than the usual burial / cremation, not that anyone could use your body without your relatives pernission.

I believe that the lecture applied only to Andalucia as autonomous regions can have different rules.

They do indeed! So back to the original post, Dave in Spain, unless Alicante is no longer in Valencia I think the link you found will be valid for you too?

Apparently, due to El Crisis, they now have too many donated bodies to deal with!

As for organ donation, while it is an opt out system in Spain, in every case they consult the family and do not go ahead without their permission.

Because they have such a good team of professionals dealing with this they rarely get refusals and Spain ahs one of the highest donation rates in the world.

And interestingly, in an article I read, of all the potential Brits donors, none refused, whilst in UK the refusal rate is 40%. The same with South Americans, refusal rate at home is 60%, but in Spain it's the same as the Spanish. In 20 years, road traffic accidents have gone from the major source of organs to one of the lowest.

Yes, the article explains pretty well how they do it, including keeping brain dead victims connected to a resuscitator to keep blood flowing to the organs.

Very drole:D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Province_of_Alicante The info I had found was with reference to Torrevieja and Alicante Hospital.As I live in Gandia I think Valencia Hospital would be more apt.

Yesbut .... :D the laws for healthcare etc are made at the level of the autonomous community of Valencia, not the province of Valencia. So if they apply in Valencia province they would also apply in Alicante province.
