Dogs

Hi all
Do you have to fly dogs to Spain??? - hubby is frightened to death of flying (i know big softy) and we were thinking of driving down with caravan so were hoping to take dogs with us - this way we thought they wouldnt fret as much either as they would be with us all the way.
Thanks for you help
Sam

Hi we are driving over and taking 3 dogs with us not only does it cut the cost but your dogs are with you all the way probably wont fret as much,I know how you feel my boyfriend suffers from Vertigo and won't set foot on a plane.
Just make sure they have had all their jabs, microchips, rabies injections and passports and your laughing.
Oh and you wont have to have the rabies blood tests if your only taking them one way which is about £70 a dog extra.

You can drive them down. We drove our cat down, and I know of people who bought their dogs by car. Just have to make sure they are comfortable, and maybe the vet might give a sedative if they are bad travellers.

can't see point in having rabies vacc if you don't have the blood test. Not all vaccs work 1st time and have to be repeated. not sure that you can get a passport issued without no blood test and even if you can you can't come back to Uk without it. So unless you know that you won't be coming back in the animals lifetime you'd have to start again. If you had to come back to Uk in a hurry you would have to put them in quarrentine or leave them behind

most vets do passports I am at work today ( at a vets ) so if you need to know anything I may be able to help. A full passport works out at abou 3170.00 - £180.00ish. You need identichip ( which I belive is also a legal requirement in spain ) Rabies vacc. Blood sample 30 days after the vacc. then when the results come back the passport is issued. You cannot re-enter Uk untill 6 months after a possitive rabies blood result reeding. Then it is just a booster every 2 years I think but will check for you

no photo, the microchip is the identification:rofl: The passport does not need renewing, but has to be kept up to date, ie/ rabies vaccine booster. Just checked and it is every 2 - 3 years depending on the manufacturer :)

No photograph required, but there is a space on the passport to put one if you wish!!! Also best to sort out who is going to put the named person in the passport, we argued for ages over who was the best 'parent' and therefore who was entitled to be put as the named person in the passport.

Re: Dogs

If you are leaving permanently then your pets passport will be issued by your local vet without have the rabies jab tested. This is only for re-entering UK.
Get everything at least 3 weeks before leaving. They are very strict on ID chips and annual rabies jabs where I live in Spain.
Don't forget to buy your beloved hounds a scalibor collar. Last 6 months and helps somewhat towards the dreaded Leishmaniasis.
Suggest anyone taking a pet looks first at the Defra site . Many deadly critters and different diseases in hot climes that one should be aware of.

Was thinking of putting our dogs' photo in passport...he being so handsome:o and was really miffed when ,travelling over via tunnel, no-one wanted to know we had our best friend with us !!

yes but if you don't have the rabies jab tested you CANNOT re- enter Uk so unless you have a home a good jobto go to ect and know you will never be returning you need the result of the blood test!

Re: Dogs

jeanc,
Then have dogs tested in Spain before you return. Excellent vets everywhere here and treatment much cheaper (at the moment)
The blood test for rabies obviously doesn't last infinitum if once here they have to be innoculated annually and lets not forget the tick and tapeworm treatment which has to be administered and passport stamped between 24 and 48 hours before returning.

Don't think anyone can say anything is forever. Expect many people relocating here hope it will be permanent but who knows what life has in store.

Not saying vets are not good in spain, we have vets from every where, spain included, working for us at times. I just think that when you are off to the unknown it would be one less thing to worry about if you did need to return within a 12 month period. From what I have read in here it happens quite often! The blood result has to have been clear for at least 6 months so if you have not had it in uk then deciede spain or wherever was not for you, you would have to wait 6 months before your animal could return even if you had the vacc done
