Dog owners
 

We are hoping to move to Spain and would like to know how prevalent the Mediterranean diseases that can seriously affect dogs are in certain areas, also processional catapillars and the most worrying, hunters who leave out poisoned bait to kill lost hunting dogs and strays. Our dogs are Well trained but high energy and need to be able to run off lead either in the hills or on the beach?
any advice will be much appreciated

Hi in our area the Jalon valley some of the things that are a problem for us we do not have dogs just cats
Lech mania caused apparently by mosquitoes our friends have their dog injected every year
Ticks are very very prevalent we treat our cats very regular
fleas treat regularly as well
processionary caterpillars are a plague at the moment to humans and animals avoid forest areas when they are around
Hunters we have had bad experiences not only with dogs but guns as well.We managed to get our mayor to ban them from our area when one of our cats was killed by them hunting on our land.Hunters do not care about you or your animals please do not let your dogs out or near them if about go somewhere else.We live in the campo so hunting is away of local life we have had many arguments with them
Poisoned food we have had a neighbors poisoned by the waste bins we are told this is a favorite place for deliberately placed poisoned food.If this happens to you pick and the food and take your dog straight away and go to the vets

Do not be put off just be careful and sensible and all will be ok.Our cats love their life in spain the majority of the time curled up in the warm outside,our big boy even dissapers for a few days here and there.Hope this helps

Standard worry is Leishmaniasis - terrible disease coming from coastal mosquitos. There is an innoculation programme but not all Vets are happy about it , worthwhile reading for yourself and taking your own decision. Alternative of anti-parasite collar and liquid such as Avantix. Processional catepillars a seasonal hazard but a very obvious one. Beach-walking, some areas have designated areas and most areas will not fine you out of season but a definite "No No" during the summer. Countryside, brilliant for dogs to run free, you can see where are the hunting areas if you look for the signs "Cota de Caza" . We roamed everywhere inland with our dog without any problem for many years.

In this area, Huelva Province, these are the ones that are to be treated and or avoided. Leishmaniasis, Heartworn, Processionary pine caterpillars, brown toads and poisonous snakes. Also ticks and avoided dogs out at dawn and dusk for the mossies. My last dog got a tick disease that eventually took her life. Dogs not allowed on any beaches bar areas designated for dogs.
