Dog: mosquito etc protection

After all the helpful advice I got in my last thread about ferries and Pet Passport, I am hoping I can get another thing sorted out:

Never having taken our dog to Spain before we have had various advice about mosquitoes, collars, ampules etc etc. Even the vet doesn't seem to be definitive! So - very interested in what you use, how effective, things to watch out for etc etc

Ours have Scalibor collars, which protect them against all these nasties.

Here's a handy article in English about keeping dogs in Spain.

Scalibor is not enough.

You need to control fleas, ticks, lice, ear mites, heart worm, intestinal worms etc.

Scalibor will help prevent some ticks and the sand fly which spreads leishmanaisis.

You also need a general wormer like drontal plus and a spot on to cover the othr nasties above like advocate or stronghold.

There is an injection to prevent leishmanaisis now but you need a blood test first to confirm the dog does not already have it.

Heartworm treatment is also needed. Ours have an injection once a year but there is a liquid and tablet form. The problem there is that it has to be administered at the same time every month.

we managed to find a vet who speaks reasonable English, had spent time in Cambridge Vet College. May cost a little extra, but his prices are still less than our UK vet, but it takes alot of the worry about communicating your concerns and worries.
Funny thing is their receptionist is Scandinavian and also speaks English, its almost like being back in the UK

Ours have scalibar collars and advantix. The advantix is prescription only in spain and england but in France it is available without prescription so we order from an amazon shop once a year for enough to last the year and it works out 50% less than buying from a vet in spain or england, we also order the scalibar collars via amazon which works out 60% cheaper than we were paying in spain. The advice is to keep dogs in from dawn to dusk to help them not get bitten by the sandfly but ours have always been outside dogs and hate to be in at night. The dogs also go to the vets every 3 months for their worming tablets and a general check up the vet only charges for the tablets she likes to keep an eye on their general health and only charges 2 euro per tablet so its well worth the visit and she administers it!! At the moment our vet is waiting to see how effective the new leishmanasis vaccine is as you still need the adavantix drops for the rest of the creepy crawlies anyway and the scalibar is over 90% effective. This is the second vet we tried in spain our first one spoke a little english but looked up every price in a book, when we asked around everyone both spanish and english said to go the one we now use as she uses a lot of common sense and a fairer pricing structure so ask around about vets when you get here.

Our dog has her yearly injections inc rabies. Also monthly drops on the back of her neck (Stronghold) There is an injection that can be given yearly for ticks, heartworm etc but the protection reduces over the months so you may find that your dog could be able to catch something whilst you thought they were protected. So, our vet recommends the monthly drops.
She also wears a tick collar. Tick collar last 6 months

We use Advantix to help protect against ticks, mozzies and sandfly. You do need to get it from the vets. It's much cheaper to buy in Spain than the UK! We also give her heartworm tablets every month.

We do not use the collar as it irritated her skin and it also made a friends dog very ill, but each dog is different.

Best of luck!:fingerscrossed:
