Your experience must have been horrific for you and I truly sympathize with you and I do hope things have turned out for you and your family health wise.

I retired from the NHS April 2005 and I keep in contact with my friends that still (for their sins work there) and I have been told that moral has finally reach rock bottom. One of the reason I left was due to the government new guidelines everyone had to be re-avail their job description. I worked with people that work shifts over a 24/7 period everyday of the year in pathology and all the thanks they have received for it is a cut in their salary, in my case if I had stayed by 2009 my salary would have been reduced by 1/4, and even with this the people behind the scenes are still working there for you it is not NHS but the government who have set such ridiculous guidelines.

Maryann please do not think I am belittling your experience I am, for from it; sadly in my job I saw this everyday and there was nothing I could do about except to be there for patients and ther family, and to be there for them if they needed to vent there feelings to me and not my staff.

God bless you Maryann and your family, you have a new life here in Spain and by the sounds of things a very strong marriage. Good Luck.

Having worked in the UK health service for over 40 years before retirement, and being one of those working 24 hour shifts in a pathology department I was well placed to see the decline of the NHS, which seemed to decline the faster as they put more and more people into managing it 'more efficiently'. Last WHO health survey had the UK in 24th place and the Spanish system in 6th, I suspect that speaks for itself. Just before I came out here I had to go to a UK hospital for hearing problems, they wouldn't supply me because I was moving out of the UK, the only reason they found out was that it would have taken 3 months between my hearing test to getting my hearing aid, and I asked if there wasn't some way of getting it quicker. OK I could have gone private, but felt that I should have had some reward for my 40 years. Over here, I had my hearing aids within 14 days of my tests. And yes I have kept in touch with friends who are still working there, and the situation has got even worse.

We were told by the director of the clinic that if we want after that we can be transferred to a Spanish Hospital were we won't have to pay!! We went with this as it means we don't have to sit for ages in the Social and be pushed pilar to post.. Our friends are spanish (lived many years in England) but they say they even find it a stressful thing to do, if you were not ill before you went you are by the time you leave. Their words not mine. Is that 60euros just for you is that for your partner as well?
What is the name of the clinic? Does it include membership to all of the clinics in the chain or just the one where you have registered? What happens if you are on holiday in some other part of spain and fall ill - does this cover you for treatment anywhere in Spain or abroad? Sorry so many Qs but the price sounds really good.

The 60 euros we pay is for both of us for private medical insurance plus dental with Adeslas. We are covered for treatment anywhere in Spain, and also abroad in the case of an emergency. If the 12 euro cover is also pretty comprehensive we will consider changing.

You can have a look at the website for the clinic http://www.centromedicochiclana.com/

I am not aware that it is part of a chain so you would only be covered in Chiclana. Basically it is an emergency clinic and a private GP practice with discounts for seeing their specialists and for having diagnostic tests. We have just renewed our annual membership and it was €144, specialist consultations are €20.

I expect your insurance pays for surgery/hospital care, this centre does have a small hospital but I would think just for minor surgery.
If you are entitled to spanish state care then a system like this is a good addition for quick and easy treatment.

If you have a good private health insurance that does not exclude any illnesses then I think it is good to keep it, once you have a problem it is very difficult to get cover. My husband has high blood pressure but all the private insurers I have spoken to exclude so many illnesses from any cover he may have that it would make it a waste of money having it.

It is causing us a real problem because our E106 expires soon and we are 5 years away from retirement age. He is still working part time for a UK company and currently paying NI in the UK but of course because we are resident here he is excluded from UK cover.
We are still trying to find a way of paying into the spanish system as a part time worker but that it another long story!

Hope this helps
Yvonne

But if the Spanish state system is as good as people say, then really all we are trying to use this additional private part is for easy quick access to a GP for initial consultation. I realise it is very difficult to get full private cover for existing conditions, but if you are happy to use the state system then thats not so much of a problem. I realise it is a problem though if your E106 is due to expire.

I have found a Centro Medical in Gandia and Oliva Nova nearby, so it may be a group or some kind of franchise maybe

Hi there,

Yes, this is something that concerns me also. I have heard some conflicting information. Some say that you need extra health insurance, and others that you don't, particularly if you can manage the language a bit. I think that, before I move over I will arrange somesort of extra cover, and then if it turns out I don't need it, I can cancel it. I wouldn't want to get into a situation where I needed care but couldn't access it. 12 Euros does sound like a very good price. I was quoted 40 Euros for a family of four, although I don't know exactly what it covers. Better do some homework. Thanks to all for the information.
