absolutely.........my kids speak better spanish than the other english kids at school (their teachers reckon they're pretty much fluent)- even those who have been here longer than us

I swear it's because they only watched spanish tele for over 3 years until a couple of months ago

Much of my initial Spanish I learnt was from TV, more specifically from The Fresh Prince!!

I had very poor grammar when I first started!

It was made worse by the fact that my OH was a Basque, so she hated Spanish and spoke it with real contempt.

we had a Basque boy stayed with us last summer....he was a little sh*t anyway - but he didn't want to speak castellano to us - he was actually here to learn english - but there was no way he would deign to try that

eventually he realised he was going to be very lonely & hungry if he didn't communicate

I don't think it helped much that a the other 3 boys with us at the time were from this region & spoke valenciano to each other...(no problem for me - my kids speak it too & I understand quite a bit) but his attitude was 'I am Basque (in fact they were his first words to us) & you are all nothing'

we have told the language school that we don't want him back this year............

When I first went out there I remember sitting trying to listen to a commentary of a football match, and thinking....."Oh my Christ I will never ever learn this language!"
