I know in the UK there are debt charities who offer help to people in debt. Do they exist here in Spain.

I do not know the answer to your question but there are two organisations who might know.

FACUA is a consumer organisation, if it cannot help directly it probably can refer you to someone who can.

PAH is a group that attempts to prevent evictions. It has members knowledgeable about debt and who would know what help is available.

Or you could try the British Embassy. I doubt if you would be the first person to ask them.

I can't say about debt charities in Spain but have personal experience of Payplan in the UK. If your/your friends debts are largely in the UK I'd contact them, and make sure all the debts in your/their current country of residence are paid first. You could also ask the Payplan people if they have any links with a similar organisation here in Spain. If it's you who is suffering from a debt problem I empathise but I'd say put your/their hands up to it as quickly as you can to stop extra interest acrueing. But get lots of advice. There's a forum called the Citizen's Action Group who can help. There are many ways through a debt problem. One is to go bankrupt and then pay as much as possible over a certain number of years after which you have the rest of your debts wiped. Not sure if that applies if you are resident in Spain though. The other way is to continue paying monthly...probably forever. And, I'd imagine if the debtor has more than one property they'll certainly have to sell one. Don't take any 'stick' from a certain group on here ;-)

I feel so sorry for you that you find the suffering of others, may I add through no fault of their own, to be such an amusing subject. I sincerely hope that you never find yourself in the same situation.
