Acroos the river this also made the local English langauge paper the Algarve Resident.
The fish mainy mullet are commmonly found in brackish water and rivermouths and would be affected by the lack of oxygen in the water.
Some Algarve beaches have also lost their sand due to recent storms and high tides , not an uncommon event and the sand usually returns.

Still strong rumours of illegal dumping as all the fish are mullet? Recent link below shows they really still have no idea what it is?

Re: Dead fish in the Guadiana ?
That would make more sense to me than the lack of oxygen as surely all fish would suffer ?

Re: Dead fish in the Guadiana ?
I would have thought that the opposite is true, an algae bloom at the mouth of the river, where mullet habituate, can cause either toxins or oxygen depletion, therefore affecting a single fish type. I would be very surprised if polution, whether deliberate or accidental, would be species specific (is that a pun?)
PS I deliberately misspelleded a couple of things to see if you'd notice

I'm hesitant to reply to a CW post in case I make a typo

I know nothing about fish, I used to throw a line off the back of the boat, just a hook and hey presto mackerel. Hmm smoked mackerel pate. I know nothing about the effects algae bloom can have nor what type of fish can be affected by its growth.
PS I can see them

Report on Algarve Daily news today that the relevant authorities in Portugal and Spain confirm that the fish deaths are due to an unspecified toxin and that there is no danger to humans.

According an article in the "Diario de Huelva" of today, the sanitary authorities have concluded that all these fishes (I do not remember their name) have died due to natural causes. No further explanation was given.
