I think so but don't quote me.

The river temp is apparently high for the time of year and therefore may be the cause of the dead fish... lack of oxygen

Estrela is just where the Guardiana crosses back from Portugal into Spain north of Moura - according to Google maps.

The only reason I 'picked up' on the spelling was, I too was trying to find the reservoirs you were talking about and realised with the wrong spelling I was getting no where.

Well, well. What's been going on in the playground?
There, there now, MikeJ. Wipe your tears and blow your nose, there's a good boy. Here's something for you to read (about the fish ):

http://www.huelvainformacion.es/arti...la/canela.html

The Junta are looking into it. The Mayor has said tests of the water for contamination have returned negative. A comment posted below the news article appears to suggest otherwise.
The Ecologistas en Acción, Ayamonte group, must be aware of the situation. (I wonder if this incident has had an effect on the fish farm?) If the fish were dying further up the Guadiana (yes no "rs between the bowel a, and di ano", sorry it slipped out), or at the reservoirs/dams, then the Confederación Hidrológica may have an answer.
Could it have been the Strawberry Moon?
P.S. What do I know? I wipe tears & knowses.

In addition to the above, if the fish were of the same species ("lisas"), they may have died (how I do not know) in the open ocean, and perhaps their bodies have been washed upstream with the tide. Hello?

P.S. Ah, michaelh has been busy finding out.

Does anybody know whether the fish (comolisas - I can't find a translation to check) are freshwater or sea fish? Would give a clue as to where it happened.
ISTR that that patch of ocean around the mouth of the Guadiana (spelling OK? ) as been liable to an algae bloom in the past because of the rich nutrients carried down by the river. Such 'blooms' can be toxic or can deprive the water of oxygen - same thing can happen in a garden pond and kill all your fish if not treated quickly, this is just the weather for such a phenomenon.

Hi MikeJ,

Not comolisas (this was a typo in the article, it should read "como lisas"), either lisas or Liza = Mullet, as michaelh mentions in his article (see above).
Google "mugil curema" and I think it mentions they can be either fresh or sea water fish. I'm none the wiser, though.
BTW, did you know that La Lota (as in Plaza de la Lota) is a type of fish? Go figure.

We were lunching in our local Portuguese resto yesterday, and this has made national news on the telly (RTP channel).

The official reason is that the heat has created micro-algae which somehow kill the fish... perhaps by taking too much oxygen from the water?

BTW there are other weird things happening, like one beach has lost all its sand!

The fish connection in the naming of the plaza came from the fish market and plaza being close together ?

Dead fish again in the river today, really is sad to see many lost whatever the reason.

Beach without sand ? that's a scary one where has it all gone ? I could have had in my courtyard and had my own beach hehehe

After a big storm a few years ago stripped a super pebble beach we knew as kids just disappeared It is strange to go there now, no big rock seat, no sound of the waves on the pebbles and seeing all the lovely colours and playing skimming.
