Default Covid travel rules will include 'Stanley Johnson loophole' for second homes

People will be able to leave the UK “in connection with the purchase, sale, letting or rental of a residential property”.

"In connection with". Nothing vague about that.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics...r-second-homes

People will be allowed to leave the UK to prepare a second home for sale or rent, according to new coronavirus regulations coming into force later this month. The latest restrictions, which will apply from 29 March, will include a list of specific “reasonable excuses to travel” outside the country, including what Labour branded as “the Stanley Johnson clause”.

Boris Johnson’s father, Stanley, last summer apparently breached Covid guidelines by travelling to his Greek villa to make it “Covid-proof”.

The exemption allows people to travel abroad “in connection with the purchase, sale, letting or rental of a residential property”. Those activities include visiting an estate agent, developer sales office or show home, viewing residential properties to rent or buy, and preparing a property for moving in.

The most ridiculous thing so far. Basically it means anyone with a second home will go on holiday. Or for that matter anyone who says they are thinking of buying a second home. How on earth are you going to check these things. You will just tick a box on a form. Absurd!!

There will always be rule breakers. That is human nature. What it will achieve is a huge reduction in foreign travel.

Not sure if anyone has noticed but there is a huge influx of young French people recently...

They come and it is non-stop party when the arrive...

Also I think there is a trend among young people for parties. I see lots of late teens / 20 somethings with bags of booze late on weekend nights in recent months. You can assume no social distancing or limits on numbers etc...

Heard of one illegal party at the weekend in a large indoor venue where there was dope smoking, dancing and uninhibited partying like it used to be.

Suffice to say a few people will probably have recoded it on their phones and this will find its way onto social media...

It all boils down to whether Spain lets them in.
It is not up to Boris who enters Spain.

It could be possible, but until Spain give out their conditions, I can't see any big rush of bikini buying.

Yes, Spain is letting them in.. Was in a boozer on Saturday night and the place was full of them watching the rugby.

Well Hugh, Spain is a very liberal place and if you feel to the need to pop out and buy a bikini, who am I to say you shouldn't...

Spain may let them in, but they shouldn't be leaving the UK, there isn't a tickbox for watching the rugby in the bar.

I think the only effective travel restrictions were Spain's which they've lifted. The UK's depend on whether or not you can keep your poker face going throughout the whole airport check-in procedure.

I could book with an estate agent to view a property prior to going on vacation to comply with Stan Jo clause. What a farce.

There is a joke circulating amongst my Spanish friends. Which is the odd one out? A German , a Frenchman, a Spaniard or a Norwegian? The answer is the Spaniard because all the others can freely eat and drink in Madrid or go on holiday to Majorca!

You would not Adam and Eve it >>>

When I let my property in UK, I employed a management agent. That did not stop tenant contacting me to complain:
  • When a light bulb failed.
  • Demanding I send an electrician to repair the central heating, Friday evening on Easter weekend. "I am a single parent with a young child, don't you know".
  • I managed to find an emergency electrician. He reported the tenant had messed up the settings on the time clock.
  • She was surprised and gave me abuse when I did not renew her tenancy.

'Them' being?

AFAIK Spain's restrictions for entry to the country have not changed so if not a Spanish national, Spanish resident, or (possibly) in possession of a resolution letter, your chances of getting on a on a plane any time soon are slim to nil.

Not a damn thing BoJo nor any of his lickspittles can do about that.

Notwithstanding that anyone hoping to chance their luck on the alleged 'loophole' had better have more than their word to prove what they claim, without some sort of supporting documentation simply saying you are travelling for xyz is highly unlikely to cut it.

Booking viewings with an estate agent is NOT the same thing as being involved in buying or selling a property but as ever those with their own agendas will read what they want to read into this so called 'loophole'.

Notdunroamin, yes I was a bit curious when I saw that one. If common sense prevails, then simply using "viewing a property", even if you have a printed confirmed booking with an estate agent, would be rejected as a basis to travel to Spain.

If someone has a property already then that is a different story. I could imagine that someone might say they want to sell their property and they have an appointment booked with an estate agent.

I guess time we will find out in a matter of weeks....
