Cost Of Keeping A Horse

Can anyone tell me what I should expect to pay for keeping a horse here in Spain. I have just over half an acre so I know I would have to buy additional feed. Also how much should I budget for routine vet bills e.g. feet, teeth, worming etc.

We reckon on about 1500 euros a year in feed (depending on where you are) pluus another 500 on vets and shooing. Barbara my wife writes on 'cost of a horse' here: http://www.animospain.blogspot.com.e...-of-horse.html

Hi,

I worked mine out at 800€ for feed only, but I do manage to buy straw straight off the field for 1.30 a bale, alfafla can be anything from 4.50 - 7.00 a bale and feed, well depends what you give them, mine have oats/barley 13€ alfalfa pellets 9€ and sugarbeet 13€ all in 40kg sacks, (thats delivered) and mine all live out 24/7 and I have no grazing.

Teeth rasping, last time I paid 80€ per horse  (very expensive here) yearly jabs, were 25€ per horse, and no idea about the farrier, I have mine all barefoot and trim myself, wormers buy from the UK, again expensive here,

and you now need a permit to keep horses here... its called a 'rega' different areas might have slightly different rules... but here you have to have a minimum of 2500m2 of land. The main vet will give you all the info you need.. I do have the forms you need to apply, which I can email to you...
