It has been announced that in July the cost will rise by 10%. That is for all households and small businesses. Large companies (none of us here) will not see an increase. This is on top of the proposed IVA rise.

So no crisis here in Spain then?

This was announced months ago.
Apparently the energy industry has been running at a loss for years and they've been told to start breaking even, hence the rises.
Electricity is expensive in Spain as the country has no oil or gas reserves of its own, part of the reason why it has been building its green energy up through hydroelectric, wind and solar farms. They are all expensive though!

It also says that the TUR tariff (which applies to most domestic users) will go up by only 4%.

This happens about twice a year. And it does rise believe me. In the last 30 months the cost of electricity in Spain has gone up a 26%. You better get used to this.

Fossil fuel resources are finite, as is the capacity of the atmosphere to accommodate their products of combustion wihtout leading to catastrophic climate change. It's in all our medium- and long-term interests that price rises reflect this and that we fundamentally reassess how much energy we consume and where we want it to come from.

Everyone is aware how much they use, are you suggesting that we go back to using candles?
I notice no mention of the plight of the vulnerable in society, the poor, elderly sick or unemployed who´s lives will be made even worse by these rises.

Electricity prices are high in Spain because a very high proportion comes from renewable sources, wind farms, solar farms and hydroelectricity

So the price of wind and water has increased or has the wind stopped blowing or what?
Notice no mention of the many people who cannot afford these rises........but in your world they dont exist so no comment!

I must say I find it weird that all the utility prices have risen sharply during the recession, while food prices have fallen; it seems the government has increased the prices it can control, while the private sector has had more sense and reduced prices as people get poorer.
The only other people to sharply increase prices during the hard times are the second-hand car dealers, is there a link somewhere? Has Spain got second-hand car dealers running the country?

At the moment the infrastructure cost of the re-newables is higher than that of nuclear and which is higher than fossil fuel so thats why the generated kilowatt is more expensive.

Spain is certainly a big player in the renewable resources league, but I think you'll find it produces around 20% in total, I wouldn´t call 20% a high proportion.

Water is going up about 2-4 euro per month in málaga too.
I really don't know how some of the people say in the cost of living threads that they only pay about 40 euro pm for electric, unless they are all gas except for a few lights.

I agree, €40 a month throughout would be very difficult.
