This link is now behind a paywall, even if I set my VPN location to the UK. :(

Well you live and learn - 'Yes, the BBC introduced a paywall for most content on its US website (BBC.com) in mid-2025, charging US users for unlimited news, features, and the live BBC News channel, while still offering free access to breaking news, radio, and some podcasts; this paywall does not affect UK users, who rely on the license fee.

First few paragraphs....'Spain is to set up a national network of climate shelters in public buildings to offer people refuge from intense heat before next summer, its prime minister has announced.

The move was announced as Pedro Sanchez laid out a plan to address the impact of climate change during a conference in Madrid on Wednesday.

"Devastating droughts and heatwaves are no longer rare. Some summers, it's not separate waves we face, but one long heatwave stretching from June through August. This is now the new normal," he said.'

Spain experienced its hottest summer and three heatwaves in 2025. A 16-day heatwave in August saw temperatures exceed 45C (113F), according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The BBC does not have a "paywall". You do need a free account. I can read it with no trouble.

Maybe setting the VPN to outside the UK will do it. I don't think the BBC can keep track of VPN IP addresses everywhere in the world, they probably only have a list of UK VPN IP addresses for iPlayer.

For anyone with family back in the UK. Buy them an Apple TV device, install Tailscale, allow them to use and benefit from the device as they see fit... but at the same time agree that you can access the device using Tailscale which basically gives you VPN access through it.

Neither the BBC nor any other UK streaming/radio/etc. service will be able to block it because to them you will appear as if you were sitting on the couch in the very same home the Apple TV device is working from.

Had read this here too but makes little sense. Imagine an elderly person having to walk to a shelter when it's 40 degrees. Would make more sense to give people free fans and reduce the electricity prices for sick and elderly.

Yes, that would make a lot of sense.

I remember when a climate shelter was an umbrella

It's similar with cold related deaths which is also the case across Spain as some can't afford high energy bills or proper insulation. Of course for homeless people these shelters might make sense but sometimes you wonder how things are planned.

26 June 2025: BBC website in US launches paid subscription service

Which I guess you won't be able to read in the US. :)

Back to climate shelters, wasn't it always the case you found an air conditioned public building, bank, or shopping centre to hide in if it got too hot while you were out?

Well, they need to pay Trumpy his billions!! I wonder if he will sign up (hahaha)

That unofficial - we have all lingered in the frozen food section of our preferred supermarket - no? These will be official, I guess and maybe win a few votes.
