Chufi for making Horchata
Morning all, I have become very fond of the Spanish drink Horchata... apparently known as the drink of the Gods...
I asked at our local fruit and veg shop for Chufi's and explained I wanted to make Horchata but the chap did say he sold them but then continued to speak way too fast with a long winded explanation.... I think he was saying that they are seasonal... would I be right?? and if so does anywhere do a dried version,
I know I can make the mexican version with rice etc, but really wanted to make the real thing.
once again any advice would be gratefully received.

Yes very seasonal.
"and if so does anywhere do a dried version"
No.
The best Horchata is from a specialist shop that make it fresh. It's pretty cheap. The fresh product is very different to the Chufi brand.
They are also best enjoyed with 'fartons' which are like a light donut...
Cheers

He was probably telling you that its a bloody long winded process that involves 14 hours of soaking just to make it at home and suggested you go out and buy some.

thanks Matt, I did wonder that... it's ok and easier to do that here, but I was thinking more for when I go back to the UK on Friday, I don't recall seeing it in England... I did read that a packet mix is avaliable too so maybe I'll look for it in Mercadona. x

You can make it from the raw ingredients (which my brother has), but as John says, it's very time consuming. We found getting the tiger nuts was easy - we find them at most of the big outdoor markets.

Re: Chufi for making Horchata
thanks again, I like the look of that site, will peruse and place an order for when I get back..
There's a big open market here tomorrow so I'll see if I can get some tiger nuts there... I am assuming it will be from the stall that does all the nuts etc... and I ask for Chufi's and not tiger nuts..
The picture I saw in the recipe for it looked as though they were dried and not the raw state... but I'm sure I will work it out ... thanks for the good advice, I knew I could rely on you xxx

I think you should ask for chufa nuts instead as Chufi appears to be just a brand.
Good luck...they are lovely.

Dried tiger nuts are available in UK. Try a healthfood shop or an old fashioned sweet shop. We used to eat them as snacks when I was a child but that was probably in a different geological era.

Well, it's a delicious drink. I had a glass last night before going to bed.

Re: Chufi for making Horchata
The last time I went sailing in Spain I took my ex, I had told her non stop about Horchata and about how nice it was but every time we went there had missed out on getting any but this time I was determined to get it sorted so while she slept I crept off and picked some up, grabbed some ice and made her a nice fresh, cold glass. Ive never seen someone spit something out of their mouth so fast and with such force!
