Was pretty much, our battle colours were a red background with a white cross, they had the white background (naturally) with a red cross, they won the power struggle within the crusaders (who were essentially over glorified tax and revenue collectors and racketeers) and they adopted the French style.

Eventually there was probably just an unofficial concencus or acceptance that showing the red cross on a white background was the wisest way to avoid "friendly fire" as they call it in the US, for instance when the various Christian fleets were sailing through the Med.

It just made common sense to do so,........ I mean who with half a brain would stand in the middle of the Liverpool Kop wearing an Everton shirt?
