Default child with special needs

Hi I am looking at moving to Spain with my partner and 2 sons (possibly Palma Nova area although not looked in to other areas yet). My sons are 12 and 14. The 14 year old has ASD (Autism) and I have just read that you cannot home school as it illegal. I was thinking my youngest would attend school and eldest would be home schooled at first as it would be too difficult for him too attend a Spanish school. Is there any advice anyone could give? Jobs and property all seem ok for us but obviously this would be a major issue in us moving over. Thanking you in advance Corina

If you search you will find lots of information on the site. Some of the problems/difficulties you might experience will be related to savings/income/health insurance/partner/capability in Spanish. i think you need to consider these first before worrying about your elder son.

I have had a look and didn't see anything relating too special needs children. My son having an education is my first priority to look into as there's no point in the rest if he can't have one in Spain. We hAve looked into everything else such as savings health insurance etc and myself and younger son will be taking Spanish lessons in September. Thank you

Autism is such a wide spectrum so it would be difficult for anyone to really tell you what is available.

A friend of mine is an Educational Child Psychologist and she assesses children younger than your son but I expect that the format for older children is similar. Her assessment ends with a report stating whether the child needs to be in a specialist class or to have one to one work for a set number of hours each week whilst being in an ordinary class with maybe additional individual help from a teachers assistant or able to cope with being in an ordinary class with a teachers assistant who overviews several pupils or able to cope in the class on their own.

How much assistance do you receive with your son at the moment? How much help do you believe that he would need in the school? What does he excell at? What are you hoping for him?

So difficult for you and I am not sure how you would be able to find out clear cut answers.

I wish you well.
