Cheddar Cheese
 

I usually shop in Carrefour or Aldi and have noticed that neither have had any Cheddar since January.

I imagine it must be related to Brexit. Perhaps British cheese producers are now sending it all to new Global Trading partners like Chile, Lebanon or the Faroe Islands.

There's plenty of Cheddar cheese in Mercadona and Lidl. We don't often shop at Lidl but called in last week and picked up one of their magazines, and they were advertising a new range of "British" items with the brand name Hatherwood, one of which was mature cheddar cheese, will be available from this weekend apparently-

By the way, the name 'Cheddar' doesn't have protected status by the EU or anyone, so anybody anywhere can make it and call it cheddar. I only say this because it may be that somewhere you pick up a pack and realise it's made in France or Spain or wherever.

Kerrygold Cheddar Cheese is produced in Ireland (within EU). It is a top class product and on sale nearly everywhere in Spain.

Although it should be noted that some particular varieties of 'Cheddar', do, in fact, have protected status in the EU.

You won't find "West Country Farmhouse Cheddar" on sale in your local supermarket within the EU (or the UK) if it confesses to having been made in Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Canada, China, New Zealand, or anywhere else outside a designated area of England, for example.

The name 'Cheddar' isn't protected, however the specific area or regional names of cheddar varieties ARE protected

Bought some in Carrefour the other day but actually better value in Mercadona - plenty of stocks in Alicante province.

I went to Lidl this morning and there was no Cheddar at all. So that makes 3 supermarkets in my area of Madrid. The UK press has talked about problems for suppliers of fresh food to export to the EU so I suppose the supermarkets are directing limited supplies to the ex-Pat areas.

Regarding Carrefour, yes there were packets of plastic orange slices labelled as Cheddar and you can get this stuff in local small supermarkets, but I'm talking about Mature Farmhouse which used to be widely available.

Also my local Carrefour used to have Kerrygold, which being Irish shouldn't face import problems but not recently.

I went to Aldi last week and ordinary cheddar and vintage cheddar were on sale. I bought quite a lot.

There are 870 UK citizens registered as resident in my municipality, out of a total population of 82,365 so it can hardly be said to be an ex-pat area.

The cheddar my husband bought in our local Lidl last week was a block of cheddar curado, not plastic orange slices. Apart from a few days just after Christmas when supplies weren't available because of the terrible weather in Madrid, there are always blocks of mature and mild Cheddar in our local Mercadona branches too.
