Cheaper electricity
 

I have a small place in Madrid which I visit for a long weekend about once a month. I am currently with Iberdrola and paying (including standing charge, of course) about 22 euros a month. For example I used 6123 kWh this last month for example. Should I be longer for a better deal somewhere else? Thanks, folks.

Is that a mistake? We used 200kWh in our house in a month. 6123kWh seems very high for a small flat used once a month.

The majority of our Iberdrola bill is standing charge and taxes. For the 200kWh we were charged €30. The total bill once standing charge and taxes were applied came to €85. We have now switched to a dual tariff contract which will save a small amount on the cost of electricity used but won't make a big difference to the overall bill. But every little helps as they say.

Well my monthly bill received today, was for 37.64 and I used 252KWh. Is there some typo in your message? I am on the N Costa Blanca with Iberdrola

Hi,
If you are interested in the possibility of reducing your electricity bill, the best way to do it, other than using less electricity, is to lower your agreed power(I think this might be called potencia).
If you look at your Iberdrola bill it will state your potencia.
At my old house my potencia was 5.5, I lowered this to 3.3 and saved 8€ + electricity tax & IVA.
There was an article on how to do it on www.moneysaverspain.com or the English consumer association site.
The instructions were very easy to follow, going through the Iberdrola virtual office.
You can also agree a DD payment plan, were you set how much you want to pay each month.

Iberdrola have a deal where they charge a slightly higher fixed charge but a lower consumption tariff designed for people who only make occassional use of their properties.
Ignoring your consumption figure , seems very strange, what you are paying is not bad at all.
can do as others have suggested, check what "potencia" you actually need, the standard is 6Kw, but maybe you can have lower and this would also reduce the bill

We are on 5.75kW - I didn't even know you could get 6kW

You can't. The ICP breaker is actually rated as current, ie. in Amps. A 25amp breaker equates to 5.75kW. ICP breakers are rated in 5 Amp increments starting at 10Amps.

OHMs Law ie. Watts = Current in Amps X Volts (which is officially 230v)

25x230=5750W=5.75kW

Isn't that the wrong way round? Surely it should be a lower standing charge with higher consumption tariff. Otherwise it would be more expensive for occasionally used properties.

Also if you run your house on electric water heater etc and reduce potencia it may keep tripping?

Thanks for the posts, folks. For the record, the monthly usage was 40kWh. I was looking at the meter reading rather than the amount used.

Yes that is the precise definition, I agree, 6Kw was an approximation

My standing charge being part time but with endessa is about 22 euros per month 5.75 potencia although we are billed 2 monthly. Electricity actually used when over and using daily for two months goes up to around 70ish euros including 2 months standing charge and we are electric for water heating, cooking etc.

My potencia is 5.75KW and it still trips occasionally. I am all electric have to careful what's connected at any given time. eg Don't put the kettle on while doing the ironing!

We have the same potencia and can have oven, hob, kettle and microwave on at the same time.

Perhaps your system isn't balanced?

I rarely get mine tripping. When it doesit is normally when water heater and cooker and kettle on at same time. We forget how much a kettle draws. I changed my water heater timer to come on outside cooking times and issue resolved. Point I was making though if house mainly electric reducing potential below 5.75 kW isn't going to work. If gas for water heating cooking then yes probably be ok.

Yes, sorry got it the wrong way round ! It is actually a 10% discount on the fixed charge
