Default Channel island ex pats

A state pensioner from Jersey asked me whether he would be able to access the Spanish NHS, and if his Jersey driving licence could be changed to a Spanish one. I have absolutely no idea.I know that the Channel Islands seem to be a No man's land where Spain is concerned.
What have Channel Islanders experienced in Spain?

The problem with Jersey is that it's not in the EU and I know that there's no agreement with Spain, meaning that a Spanish person coming to Jersey would have to pass both a theory and a practical driving test. I reckon it's the same if a Jersey person goes to Spain. Jersey has no Health agreement with Spain, so he would need to get private health cover and apply for a Visa.

I'm from Jersey and looking into moving to Spain myself.

The way i understand it to work is that Channel Island residents who have UK born parents or grandparents have full EU residency rights.

Hope this link helps:

It's there now, seems like it had to be approved by a mod first as i'm new to the forum!

I'm very interested to find out about driving licences too, something that had not crossed my mind previously.

If you have a Jersey driving licence, youbwould have to go through the test again, or perhaps live in UK, change it there, move to Spain and exchange it. I don't know if it is that simple!

If you exchange a licence for a UK licence and subsequently want to change it to a Spanish one, that is not allowed. It has to have been originally issued in a country which is on the list of approved countries.

My current plan is to come over to Spain on a trial/holiday, rent for 6 months, and after the 6 months are up decide whether i would be happy staying on a longer basis.

Can i take my Jersey registered car and drive on my Jersey license for 6 months?

Yes, you can.

In theory after 90 days you must register on the list of EU foreigners, but the hundreds of thousands of holiday home owners who just stay for the winter don't bother.

But don't forget that you might not be covered by your insurance, so best ask, as you might need additional cover.
