Changed my gas boiler to Electric
Hi All,
After finally returning to Costa Esuri after a 2 year absence it is so good to back to our Apartment in Vista Esuri. Since we are here for a month, we decided to go ahead and swap from gas to electric for our hot water heater. All I can say it now brings peace of mind, no more having to ignite the heater when we come back and the hot water is easy to regulate through the taps and shower. I highly recommend it. One less bill to deal with also. |
Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
We did this over 2 years ago and we have saved so much money having no gas bills over the last 18 months of lockdown. We have a 2 bedroom apartment and installed a 100 litre water heater and have always had plenty of water for up to 4 occupants. If you haven’t already done so, I recommend putting a timer on the plug socket so that it heats the water fully overnight and if you need more hot water during the day you can override the timer by pressing the advance butto 👍

Note as Buck has said you can override the timer if needed but the tank retains plenty of hot water through the day generally making this action unnecessary. Also with my sense of humour I always enjoyed the look on the faces of the rippoff gas engineers when they arrived to check my non existent gas installations  |
Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
Many thanks for tips guys ! Much appreciated. We are very happy so far. 😀

Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
With the new 3 way electricity tariffs using a timer to only heat it at the lowest rate will save a great deal of money.

Yes I changed and have never regretted it.

Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
done this many years ago with a very efficient electric boiler but not using a timer as having solar

Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
I have used a simple timer at the plug for 13 years no issues. Set to come on as Fred says cheap hours around 3am no problems.

Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
We have had both, in rented properties. I can say I much prefer the electric boiler that we have now, even tho its a cheap bricomart one that is probably not the most efficient, due to the way it works - theres always hot water, it doesnt go off when you are in the shower etc.
Re gas water heaters - they are set to go off when the flue gets too hot - when its been running for a while. theres a thermosdat there. |
Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
Please, just make sure your "plug in" timers have the correct load bearing rating for your hot water (e) heater(/e) at minimum and maximum load. Otherwise you are putting yourself, other people if in an apartment building and your property under risk of fire.
The proper way to do it is in the fuse box (breaker box) with professional installation. |
Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
Almost all plug in timers are (in theory) rated at 3kw which is much higher than most heaters in Spain.
|
Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
I just checked my timer is 3.6kw and my tank is 1.8kw so should be fine.

Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
I have tankless solar heating for summer HW and a separate 100lt electric boiler for Winter.
Having experimented over the last 3 years with timers and different regimes I eventually determined that leaving it switched on 24/7 was the most cost effective at around €18-20 per month. Unlike UK boilers in Spain are typically either 1.5 or 1.8kw. |
Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
Most surveys I have read agree that 24/7 running is less efficient that using a timer
That theory becomes irrelevant once you introduce different charging periods which now apply to almost all users. Using a timer to utilise the off peak rates saves a great deal of energy which is why these different rates are being enforced on most users. |
Re: Changed my gas boiler to Electric
Here is what is professionally recommended
Sorry it is huge!!!!!! €15,00 on amazon.es or probably around €50 for an electrician to install with all their guarantees https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...77edc35146.jpg |
