Cat's Snip

I need to have a female cat neutered, and have just been down to the two vets in the town. One quoted me €150 until July when the price goes up to €200, and the other quoted me €195. I didn't hang around long enough to find out if they included IVA in that price.

Seems a bit steep to me, so can anyone let me know the prices you have paid recently around the country in comparison ?

It wasn't a 'rip off the foreigner thing' as it was on their computer screens.

I mentioned it to a Spanish neighbour, who started spitting feathers about the cost of veterinary fees for his two gun dogs.

TIA.

It's been about 10 years since I've had female cats neutered and this was in Finland. Back then I got a discounted price, EUR160 for two of them. 200 sounds a bit steep for Spain, since Finland is a lot more expensive in all respects.

I may be worth finding out if any of the local animal welfare groups run campaigns. We have those every year. During the campaigns, the prices are considerably lower.

Sounds about what we paid for a female cat.

200 euros was the cost for our small female dog (all follow treatment included) 5/6 yrs ago. No idea about cats although I thought they were cheaper than dogs.

Yes - our local animal welfare group has a deal with the local vet. Every so often they have a mass neutering day at a well reduced cost.

We've had 2 done here - about €80 each. Males are about €40.

But we've been quoted as much as €300. Just greedy, I reckon.

Almost worth the ferry fare !

I had a lead on another vet (if you'll pardon the expression) a lot further away and he quoted me €190. If I was in Britain I would have reported the lot of them to OFMoggie for price fixing.

I'm having trouble finding an animal welfare group in the neighbourhood.

The problem is that I have two of them, "gatos de carreras", who have adopted me as a food source and are now dropping kittens on me.

Thanks to all contributors for the advice.

You don't say where "town" is but here in Granada at the turn of the year we had a cat neutered and it was about €120 (other treatment at the time muddies that just a little) and a tom for €95.
The thing to remember for the cat is that it is invasionary surgery although treated as a minor local op.
For the tom it is an injection in the testicles.

Perhaps we are getting a sort of special price because we have been visiting for 3 years with our dog but we originally selected the place by its location not too far from main roads in/out and because they speak English. The receptionist is from Northern Europe and fluent in Spanish and English, which is a great help when explaining what is wrong and making an appointment.

If this is doable for you or anyone else looking for a vet in the Granada area then PM me and I will give the contact details.

Thank you Domino, but I'm on the Costa Brava, and more than 20 minutes with a screaming cat in a cat carrier in a car, for me, would be suicidal.

I know, and it takes a lot for a cat to commit suicide
you really should improve your driving
