I think you're nearest office is in Denia....not sure! Here's the SUMA website again.

www.suma.es
just had a quick look at that SUMA website and Gandia or Oliva are not shown on their Municipality listing, so I dont think you will be able to sort it out in Denia Mitzyboy - I would try the Gandia place first

this is the website shown on my paperwork which might be of use

Yes the only SUMA offices near me are Pego & Denia, I was suprised there wasn't one in Gandia

Perhaps Oliva and Gandia are governed by this other body "Diputacio de Valencia"

Mitzyboy, the tax paid for last year (2006), where was it paid?

I think because its not SUMA in the Valencia region ? there is nothing on any of my "car tax" papers that says SUMA - thats where I think the confusion is

whats does SUMA stand for ???? does anyone know ?

I believe car tax, council tax etc are issued regionally at different times of the year - SUMA is for Alicante region

on my paperwork is says Diputacio de Valencia whereas on the SUMA site it says Diputacio de Alicante

or maybe its my water logged brain

Here in Valencia (province) the car tax is paid at your local town hall (ayuntamiento).

Every town hall will have a different date. Here in La Pobla de Vallbona it's June, and the tax is called 'Impuesto Vehiculos Tracción Mecanica'

I pay mine by DD and last year was 47.71 Euros.

When you buy your car, the garage or gestoria should register it with your ayuntamiento.

Well then, as spain and derek have said, check to see if it has been registered to your address/ayuntamiento/Diputacio de Valencia and if not then you will have to do the procedure.

What a wicked web we weave *lol*

Different places, different rules, different dates, different ways of doing everything!

Good luck and once you have figured it out, let us know too

I just took my car papers to our local Town Hall, they looked it up on computer, it seems the tax was last paid in Marbella, but I had had the car three years and never had a letter or anything about it even though car is registered in my name and correct address, they printed out the outstanding tax due also for the year ahead, they then changed the payment to my local Town Hall, I went to another desk and paid it, all done within ten minutes. May be different in other parts of Spain

However that is assuming that the transfer has gone fully through and been done correctly. A friend went to renew his, and found out that his documents were still not in order, new car, bought from a main dealer, so he had to go to the Traffico in Alicante, and even then he didn't have the paperwork they wanted, so ahd to go back to the dealer, get more paperwork, then back to Alicante, where it did work as he took everything he thought they could possibly need, passport, padron, bank books all car paperwork + the extras. Took him about 3 weeks in total to get it sorted.
